Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons.  You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

  1.  You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

   a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

   b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro.  You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update. 

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

  • Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
  • Type the following and press enter   slmgr.vbs /dli
  • You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
  • On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).  If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade. 

  c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact.   To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

  1. You have not installed all pending Windows Updates.  You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:
  • On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

  • Tap or click App updates
  • Tap or click Sync licenses
  1. The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly. 

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.  Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

Microsoft has released a troubleshooter to help find problems that may prevent you from updating to Windows 8.1.

    I downloaded the Windows 8 release onto a USB drive when I bought it.

     

    Running slmgr /dli reports:

    Name: Windows(R), ProfessionalWMC edition

    Description: Windows(R) Operating System, RETAIL channel

    Partial Product Key: TCKWD

    License Status: Licensed.

     

    I too am unable to find Windows 8.1 on the Microsoft Store, what can I do to get the update?

    Don't really understand it is there a easy way instead because I have to accounts and can not get rid of my second account

    You should create a system restore point first, before you attempt any tasks. Please note you should not change your Microsoft Account to an Administrator Privilege Level Account. Better to Create a Local User Account under User's Accountfrom Desktop, Right click in the bottom left corner and select Control Panel then User Accounts, Manage Another Account/Create New Account and set Privilege Level to Administrator. Please note that if you set Privilege Level to Administrator via Elevation in your User Account Settings, this will leave you open to attacks as you should not have Administrator Privilege set for an Account that you use for everyday use, which is what your Microsoft Account is for. You can still make changes to your system/devices even if your Account does not have Administrator Privileges by Switching to a Local Account, for Local settings. However, depending on User Account Control settings you might still need the Administrator password. If there is only You using your Pc, It is best to have the Account that you used to Install your System on and set as the Administrator Privilege Account and Password Protected and then create a new Standard User Account, Password Protected.****

    Log Off and then you will see the new user Account (you just created) on the Log Screen, after you select this Account wait for Windows ("to set Devices/things up and get a few things ready") after which when you Sign In to this Account and you enter you Microsoft Account information, will become your Microsoft Account with Standard Privilege Levels which you will use for everyday tasks safely. You should create a New Standard Microsoft Account for every User you wish to give Access to your Pc in the same way. Then every time you need to Log In was an Administrator, just Sign out/Switch  from your Microsoft Account to the otherLocal Account. To clarify, if there is only you using this Pc/Device you will have two Accounts displayed on the Log on Screen Administrator Local Account and your Microsoft Standard Account, for other user's then extra Standard User Microsoft Accounts will be displayed, all Password Protected.
