Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons.  You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

  1.  You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

   a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

   b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro.  You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update. 

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

  • Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
  • Type the following and press enter   slmgr.vbs /dli
  • You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
  • On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).  If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade. 

  c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact.   To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

  1. You have not installed all pending Windows Updates.  You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:
  • On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

  • Tap or click App updates
  • Tap or click Sync licenses
  1. The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly. 

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.  Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

Microsoft has released a troubleshooter to help find problems that may prevent you from updating to Windows 8.1.

    I see that you have an Acer computer, IF you want to go the route I did, look for Acer eRecovery Agent on your PC. YOU WILL LOSE APPS AND DATA IF YOU DO THIS AND WILL TAKE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. BACK UP IMPORTANT DATA!!! I recommend you find an alternative, as this worked for ME, but it was a very time consuming process. Good luck.

    What did you do to? Help :(

    my PC manufacturer had a built in recovery agent, basically reset it to the state it was in out of the box. You might want to check with your manufacturer's website and see if this is an option for you. Trust me, it was not fun and i lost a lot of apps and data, all of which will take months to assemble again. If you do go this route, and your PC did not come with Win8, be sure to have your product key handy, as i had to redownload Win8, then update. Worth all that hassle just for 8.1? No, not really, but my PC was in a bad state and was helpful to me, as this may not apply to some.

    DAMN!  It aborted again, this time at 51%, returning that same error code (0x80240031)

    This is the WORST!!!  UPDATE!!!!  PROCEDURE!!!!!  EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Microsoft is really giving themselves a black eye here.

    Man that is terrifying as I cannot even get that far...Can we please pretty please with sugar on top get a simple link to the same installer process on a site accessible via a browser.  You know 8.1 update for It professionals or something!??  What in the world is going on here.  Is CGI running MS as well??!!  I imagine that is due to load on the MS Store WoodySmith but that is laughable and unacceptable.  Ironically the store on my client's machine will not even open with 8.1 preview installed and I am at a loss to fix this....so you got farther than me in this maze.
