If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons. You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.
a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.
b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro. You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update.
If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:
If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the
Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade.
c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact. To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.
If you are having issues with installing Windows Update we recommend you post for help with that issue.
You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)
To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter. Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

I have also tried this "trick", using a placeholder generic product key from this site(100% legal although I realize MS does not quite condone this idea) I am able to mount and run the ISO however I reach a certain point, after a restart and my current version(Win8 Pro) is restored. Error code 0x80070004-0x2000D shows. I have now attempted EVERY possible way to update(even attempted to refresh windows as well, but I do not have a backup disk to insert as it seems I am missing files to accomplish this, as well.) Nothing on my end works, I'm at the end of my rope. How about allowing 8.1 to be installed using a VALID Win8 key???? Simple idea, right???
Hi Ray,
I'm not sure what you mean by a "generic" product key but I suspect this could be related to the root of your issues with seeing the update in the store. If it is an OEM or retail key you should see it in the Store. If it is a volume License key you won't. By "Generic" I assume you mean a Volume License. In this case you would need to install it using media obtained though your volume license. You can download media to install this using the steps I detailed above. To be clear OEM, Retail, and Volume Licenses are all valid Keys, but only OEM and Retail Licenses permit an Update via the Store. With a Volume license key you need to use the methods I described above. With respect to that other error I would post that in a new thread. Hope you get it working.

Desperate times call for desperate measures lol, It's ok however, as I'm guessing I will not be able to update until I am able to install the required KB. This was a last ditch attempt, and was only tried once everything else failed. The key was obtained via microsoft and is public, in theory installation is possible this way and you can then change the product key once installation is complete to your own valid Win8 key through command prompt, but again I'm no expert in any way whatsoever. Just going for broke since nothing else is working. From what I have been reading, it seems everyone has a common problem...inability to install certain windows updates that will in turn permit updating to 8.1. This is just amazing since the install of Win8 was totally painless and flawless(on my end).
I don't have the window 8.1 update in the windows store. I have tried all the suggested fixes and none worked. I have a retail license. My computer also tells me that my apps licenses cannot be synced. My second computer also will not update but that is something else which I will address once this one is straighten out.
Below is the information that the help page suggested I include.

Of course it was related, but let me repeat REALLY slowly, as your reading comprehension skills seem somewhat compromised this morning. Perhaps you didn't get enough sleep last night.
I had precisely this problem. The update to Windows 8.1 did not appear in the Store. The area where it normally appeared displayed some Netflix ad instead (and then it scrolled to others, but I didn't stick around to see). This was odd, because it had previously appeared and I had already attempted installation numerous times, which had all aborted.
Running Microsoft Update, which revealed a surprising 36 uninstalled updates (surprising because the settings call for automatic updating and the computer is heavily used), solved this problem for me.
Now if you can explain how this is off-topic in this thread, then by all means enlighten me.
But of course it might have confused or distracted you when I mentioned that another problem, or actually the same one I had previously, arose again, aborting at 50% returning Windows error 0x80240031. I have commented at length on that error in the appropriate forums.
And if you think I have not sought solutions for that, I should tell you that I was for many years the Internet Services Administrator and IT Security Administrator for a major Federal agency well-known for its technological prowess at the genuine bleeding edge. I have worked with Microsoft soperating systems since the original MS-DOS, and I have tried everything I can try to fix it to no avail, from cleaning it of all adware, spyware and malware (it was pretty clean already -- just a few tracking cookies) to removal of all anti-malware applications, to running sfc /scannow, to updating all of my drivers, to reflashing my BIOS, to multiple clean boots, to boot to safe mode with networking, and much, much more, and nothing works.
I am now escalated two levels with Microsoft Support and awaiting their return call, but in the meanwhile I would again suggest that you read more carefully those posts to which you are tempted to reply.
sory what i ment was every step above are done and im supposed ti install the KB 2871389 because i it says "RETAIL channel"
