Windows 8.1 - Keyboard & Mouse Not Working

Hi,

I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.

It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.

Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

**UPDATE**

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

"Had the same thing happen to me when I upgraded from WIN 8.0 to 8.1. I found this solution that worked for me....Go into the advanced mode in the UEFI bios and disable Intel XHCI Mode. Once I did that and all my USB devices worked"

Hi guys,

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

Hope it works for you all!

Removing or deleting Trusted Devices from the Micosoft account fixed tge problem. There were incorrect and incompatible settings from a previous tablet that were disabling the keyboard. From a different computer, sign in to Microsoft account, Overview, Security, Trusted Devices, select the hotlink Remove all the Trusted Devices associated my account. Refresh Windows completely.

I had this stupid issue already 3 times and the only solution I was using is "refresh" windows...

However, my keyboard is ps2, and mouse is usb.

All usb devices work, aside of keyboard and... sound drivers. can't reinstall them, can't do anything.

and my bios is BIOS, not uefi, so i can't disable anything there.

    clap, refreshing again...

Do anyone know a way to contact with MS engineers who really interested in solving this issue? The girls with headset sitting in office and acting as support team are useless. All they can say is "reinstall drivers".

    Hi Sam,

Thank you for sharing the information.

This will help others who are facing the similar issue.

Since the BIOS settings need to be modified to disable Intel XHCI Mode, for further assistance you may contact the computer manufacturer.

Important: Modifying BIOS (Basic input output system)/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. "Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk'.

But doesn't Microsoft alter the BIOS ?

How did this change in BIOS occur, but for the upgradation process to 8.1.

It worked flawlessly before the upgradation.

I know that 8.1 is much, much better than 8. I love to upgrade to 8.1. In fact I had it. When 8.1 also became unstable I had to go back to 8, because none of the 2 images of the system I had did work for me. Only the oldest image that I had, that of Win 8, did work. A lot of time and resources wasted.

About ' Intel XHCI Mode', it may work, but what about those motherboards and Processors are non-intel?

Again, the Keyboard and Mouse worked with BIOS ?, to tweak BIOS ?

Of late, after my 3rd attempt at upgradation from 8 to 8.1, I also notices that at point of entering the oassword (of course I did it using onscreen KB) there is no internet connection. I found this bug today only.

Another point I have to mention is about the 'Recovery pen drive'. It never worked for me. A recovery CD is much reliable.
