Windows 8.1 - Keyboard & Mouse Not Working

Hi,

I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.

It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.

Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

**UPDATE**

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

"Had the same thing happen to me when I upgraded from WIN 8.0 to 8.1. I found this solution that worked for me....Go into the advanced mode in the UEFI bios and disable Intel XHCI Mode. Once I did that and all my USB devices worked"

Hi guys,

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

Hope it works for you all!

GOOD DAY! I have a Microsoft windows 8 laptop that ceased function of the mouse/keyboard. I am currently in graduate school trying to complete my work and this issue is going to cripple me. Fix it now.. I don't have time for your foul-ups anymore.. I understand that the touch-screen, and app based OS is great for the average consumer, but this OS is terrible for student productivity. Why would I want to use a touch-screen for presentations and typing long assignments? I normally use a windows 7 laptop, but the cooling system just failed. 2 Windows laptops, both failed at the same time. Difference is that your software is failing me with the win8 laptop. FIX THIS ISSUE. I CANT EVEN SEE WHAT IM TYPING!! GREAT DESIGN..

Justin,  Look back through this thread.  Microsoft have know about this for a long time.  They have not fixed it.   Try the BIOS solution, mentioned earlier - it worked for me.  The BIOS menu is before windows starts.  Usually pressing a specific key as the computer is turned on or rebooted, will invoke it.  This is different for different manufacturers - look up your manual.   in that menu look for a way to disable Intel XHCI mode.  Then all should be ok.

alternatively contact Microsoft, for a mere 80 euros, a Microsoft engineer will "work with you to solve your problem" - note it is your problem, not theirs.

if you have difficulties with the BIOS menu, post here again  with the make and model of your box.  Some PC manufacturers have been helpful - try yours

    good luck

My problem is similar in that the keyboard and mouse do not work at the initial windows screen after the auto update of 11/3/15.

Things that seem unique to me are

    • My keyboard and mouse are wired not usb
    • I do not have a a UEFI bios
    • I have an AMD processor (X2 550)

I have tried restoring but each time I get a message (translated from French) System restoration failed on extracting a file c:\System32\adtschema.dll. The restoration point was damaged or deleted during the restoration.

So it looks as if I now have an electronic brick

Any suggestions as to how to turn this into a computer running Windows 8.1
