Hi,
I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.
It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.
Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

I upgraded my Toshiba recently to Windows 8.1 and not immediately but out of the blue my keyboard stopped working or re-typing the same keystrokes.
After much frustration trying different options and working around by plugging in a USB keyboard I finally discovered and resolved the problem.
The issue came down to the drivers and BIOS.
I downloaded and installed the latest Toshiba Windows 8.1 drivers from the Toshiba Japan website and then installed the latest BIOS update from the Toshiba Australia site. Full keyboard functionality returned after I installed the BIOS update.
Needless to say it was a relief to unbrick my PC but it would have been nice the Windows 8.1 upgrade process advising what to do next i.e update the PC firmware.
Hope this info helps other suffers out there.
ok- my keyboard and my mouse both have stopped working on my desktop--they work on the old computer- so I am in front of my moniter- and the computer has booted up and the honeycomb screen with the time is displayed- but since my keyboard and mouse are not being recognized- or drivers corrupted- or are being ignored- I have no way to interact with the system.... When I turn on the computer - I can see two lights on the keyboard light up....I do not have a windows disk- was not provided. nobody seems to be able to explain how to get the computer into the safe mode. This computer was just bought a week ago- Have turned it on and off about thirty times. I do not have a touch monitor..... Thinking I will just return it and forget about windows eight- or 8.1 whatever.

One more thing. The first solutions are posted in this thread on 9 November 2013. I just installed the upgrade last Sunday, 26 January 2014. Why is Microsoft still offering this upgrade without any warning, when these problems are known for over 2.5 months?
Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.
I had the same problem as the OP on my Aspire S3 laptop, and luckily, disabling xHCI mode in the BIOS was a solution for me too.
I've run all updates before upgrading to Windows 8.1. And up to this problem, I have never entered the BIOS (let alone change any setting there).
I don't understand your argument about "hardware compatibility", since we are talking about an upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It is clear that the Windows 8.1 upgrade is flawed, since Windows 8 did not have this problem. It turns out it is dangerous to use on some hardware.
Everyone understands that if a non-Microsoft person says you should change BIOS settings, that Microsoft cannot vouch for that solution.
Your response really annoyed me. You criticize a working solution, but don't offer any useful solution yourself.
As long as you don't take responsibility of the flawed upgrade software, and state univocally that "Windows 8.1 is known to malfunction and break the keyboard, mouse and USB on some hardware", the advice to roll back is simply ridiculous and arrogant. Who in their right mind is going to roll back and accept all its consequences on the "hunch" that this may solve the problem?
