Hi,
I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.
It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.
Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

John, the boot menu comes up before windows
depending on your box, a specific key or combination
has to be pressed while it boots to see this menu
f2, f12, del, f8, look up your documentation
or tell us the make and model

It would be nice if Microsoft warned people that moving from 8 to 8.1 could leave them without keyboard or mouse and no obvious way out.
It would be nice if Microsoft tested 8.1 before releasing it with a recommend,
by testing I mean adequate testing.
When I fell into this trap, I spent hours trying to resolve it.
I followed the steps advised the microsoft web site
Finally I had an on-line chat with a "microsoft engineer" - who wanted eighty euro to resolve it!
I wonder how many others parted with their cash?
Rather than warning about bios, would it not be better to warn about 8.1?

When you perform the update from Windows 8, it was recommended to run the Windows Updates and install all the available updates including the optional driver and firmware updates for the computer before performing the Windows 8.1 update.

However; regarding the BIOS updates, you need to always get in touch with the computer or device manufacturer.
Important: Modifying BIOS (Basic input output system)/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.
