Hi,
I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.
It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.
Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

I disabled the chic mode but when I go save and restart my PC the mouse and key board don't work on my desktop
I seem to be having similar issues as many in this forum had to deal with, except that the solution remains elusive. I bought a Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 8 or 8.1 (cannot really tell at this point, but, considering the similarity of the problems I running into with those in this forum that just upgraded to 8.1, it is probably 8.1). Keyboard works fine while booting and in the BIOS, but, as soon as Windows is loaded (even the install CD), it stops working. The mouse does not work at all, though I can tell that it is getting power until Windows is loaded then it stops.
I tried different USB ports and different keyboards and mice (wired and wireless) to no avail. I cannot navigate in Windows at all so trying to access "Ease of Access" or Device Manager is not an option for me. The Dell BIOS does not give me the option to turn off xHCI so I have no clue how to solve this problem. Any ideas?
sometimes (only sometimes) a mouse in a usb3 port will work while the usb2 port does not work.
there must be lots of similar dells to yours, someone else must have encountered the problem - have you asked in a dell forum?
The running-then-stop one means either that Windows has badly configured drivers OR the USB hub reports a problem to Windows (short-circuit or anything else, that is, hardware issue)
The sometimes-working-sometimes-not chooses the hardware one!
Windows (7 and newer, maybe even Vista) should have the drivers to work with 3.0 by default. That is, unless the installation is very old (>1 yr) or you fiddled with the drivers somehow, there should be no such software problem.
