KB2887595 update problem, "Failure configuring Windows updates-undoing changes".

Ctrl Panel,

search for Troubleshoot,

select Troubleshhoting,

at the bottom, under System and Security

select Fix problems with Windows Update.

go back and try to update again

Providing access to 'C:\WINDOWS\softwaredistribution'  folder should work.

Be logged in as the Administrator account to change the ownership or permissions

How to take ownership of a file or folder or Drive in Windows 8/8.1

a) Go to the drive that contains the file or Folder whose ownership you want to change.

b) Right Click of mouse on that file or Folder and Choose “Properties“.

c) Navigate to “Security” tab.

d) Click on Edit, then click Add.

e) Under the "Enter the object names to select box"- type "Everyone"(without quotes) and click on "Check names".

f) Click Ok

g) A new window will open up with Security tab- Under "Permisssions for Everyone", Check mark the "Full control" option.

h) Apply and Ok.

i) Ownership allowed for folder or file.

How to change permission of a file or folder or drive in Windows 8/8.1

a) Go to the drive that contains the file or Folder whose ownership you want to change.

b) Right Click of mouse on that file or Folder and Choose “Properties“.

c) Navigate to “Security” tab.

d) Then Click "Advanced".

e) In the section "Owner"-Click on "Change", this will open "Select User or Group window. In the box, type "Everyone" and click "Check names", hit Ok.

f) Check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and hitApply.

g) Now you will see a prompt "If you have taken ownership of this object, you will need to close and reopen this object's properties before you can view or change permissions."

h) Hit Ok and then again Ok.

i) Permissions allowed for folder or file.

Didn't worked for me. Although Troubleshooting found and repaired some strange database-problems, the update still fails and restores the system to its previos state during the update process.

I tried this, the Windows Update troubleshooter and the standalone installer.  No luck.

Turns out some anti virus programs are reporting this update as false update, at least mine did, Bit Defender that is.

All I did was turn off all the protection,including real time scan and of other stuff like On Access scanning, Active Virus control.

Then I did for a recheck of updates and continued to install as normal.

Upon restart the update was successful and I have turned on the protection of my anti virus to normal.

You should check if your Anti-Virus is also doing this funny thing.
