    where would shadow copies for other than file history show up?

    File history, backup, system restore, SQL Server all use the volume shadow copy service.

    Dillon_642.   Interesting but I have a horrible delay accessing devices and printers and I've never had shadow copies turned on for any of my drives.

    Like Dillon_642 I had also muddled through lots of useless "solutions" about enabling Bluetooth services and updating Realtek drivers before giving up on Devices and Printers entirely until I found this solution by accident -- I was actually looking for a solution to why my PC was taking longer and longer to boot. Turns out I had over 16,000 ghost shadow copies, which are enumerated both at boot and when opening D&P, slowing both down.

    A Windows bug prevents old shadow copies from being deleted when a backup program is done with them and they build up over time. Microsoft has released a hotfix that fixes the bug and a tool called devnodeclean to clean up the ghost shadow copies. I didn't bother with the hotfix, just made a daily scheduled task to run devnodeclean.
