I am running Vista and IE9, which, when I try to update, says that IE9 IS the most current browser for Vista. At someone else's suggestion, I went to TOOLS, COMPATIBILITY VIEW SETTINGS, and removed MSN.COM from the compatibility view list. My MSN.com homepage immediately changed from the unusable "list look" to what I assume is the new MSN. Try it - it can't hurt at this point.
You are using an outdated browser. Please upgrade to the latest version for the best MSN experience.
Today I was absolutely surprised when trying to access MSN Money and could not, getting instead the message "You are using an outdated browser. Please upgrade to the latest version for the best MSN experience." There was no warning yesterday or overnight when I was happily using the MSN Money site with no problems, that all of the sudden today there would be a "new" MSN site that would not be functional for many operating systems and browsers. The MSN pages are almost unusable, formatted as a long list and in a way that does not show or allow the former functionality. Can't access my stock portfolio yet, on which I rely. My browser is Safari 5.1.10. I visited the Apple Support site and there is not a newer version of Safari available for my operating system, which runs Mac OSX version 10.6.8. So I have the most up to date browser possible for my operating system. My Mac is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB or RAM, quite modern enough according to the MSN compatibility site, and, their compatibility site also says my version of OSX is compatible with MSN. To try to get functionality, I uninstalled Silverlight and then re-installed it, following the installation instructions exactly at the Silverlight site. Re-started my browser but still no improvement at MSN.com. Can anyone offer help on this? Any idea why MSN does this to regular customers? Thank you.

I had this problem with several machines at work and it was resolved by going to compatibility view settings andREMOVING msn.com from the list. Every machine that had this problem in IE9 also had msn.com listed in the compatability view settings.
This actuall works to solve the problem.

2014-10-06T09:07:54+00:00 I agree. I use yahoo now and can get my mail there. I have not yet tried to move portfolio over there. Am hoping MS gets that fixed.
Yahoo is not bad. Never had a reason to go before. Anyone else finding new sites that are better. ?
What I found initially is that I could never access the MSN home page or MSN Money properly, or my stock portfolio on MSN, with my Safari browser version 5.1.10, despite clearing my cache and eliminating cookies. The browser version I have is the latest possible version for my Mac OS X 10.6.8, so I cannot upgrade that further without upgrading to Mavericks which I am not willing to do at this point. So what I did was get Mozilla Firefox, and then I was able to finally access my MSN stock portfolio upon which I rely for work. What I discovered at that point was that the new MSN stock portfolio tracker is vastly inferior to the old MSN portfolio tracker. And what I just discovered moments before I was about to make the post below which is a review of the new MSN portfolio tool and the Wikinvest portfolio too, is this UPDATE: Using tips given on this forum (thank you all!) and on a Mac Forum (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2700780?tstart=0), here is everything I did to finally be able to view the new MSN Money and my stock portfolio (now called “My Watchlist” at the new MSN) with my Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Safari version 5.1.10, and I don’t know if the order of #s 1, 2, and 3 matters:
- From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences, then select the “Advanced” tab. Place a check mark in the box at the bottom next to “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.
- Go to the Safari menu bar and click Safari > Empty Cache, then choose “Empty” when given the choice to empty the cache or cancel.
- Go to Safari menu bar, click Safari > Preferences, then click on the “Privacy” tab. Next click on the button that says “Remove All Website Data...”, and when a box comes up offering to cancel or “Remove Now”, click on “Remove Now”.
- Quite Safari, then re-start Safari, or just Quit Safari and re-start your computer for good measure.
- Open Safari, and go to the MSN Money website. It will show the new crummy unusable site that is basically a list.
- Now, on the Safari menu bar, go to Develop > User Agent > Internet Explorer 9.0. The MSN Money site should now show in its new, usable format. If it does not display properly on your browser, try one of the many other options for browser versions at Develop > User Agent > . I initially chose Firefox 4.0.1 -- Mac, because Firefox has been allowing me to view the new MSN site on my computer, but this option in the Develop > User Agent menu did not allow me to view the new MSN using my browser Safari 5.1.10. So next, I chose Develop > User Agent > Internet Explorer 9.0, because I remembered folks on this forum mentioning IE 9.0 as being able to view the new site once cookies and caches were cleared. You could try other options here if IE 9.0 does not work for you.
- Is it better to use Safari with the User Agent Internet Explorer 9.0 chosen from the Develop menu, or, is it better to use Firefox? Not sure. As long as there are no security vulnerabilities with using IE 9.0 as a “User Agent” (whatever that is) on Safari, then I would think it best to use Safari which typically has better security and won’t require opening another browser which could use more RAM than using Safari plus Firefox, since I will already have multiple tabs open at once already on Safari.
Now back to the post I was about to make, which is mostly a review of the new MSN portfolio and Money stocks site, as well as a shorter review of Wikinvest’s portfolio tool:
For starters, the new MSN portfolio does not allow you to view the same large breadth of information in one view, as it did before. Thus it is much more clunky and extremely time-consuming, as one is forced to click between 4 different pages (Summary, Fundamentals, Portfolio holdings, and Transactions) to get the same information that before you could see in one screen. This takes forever, to click between pages. And, when you get to each new separate page, for some dumb reason the system will not keep the stocks in the alphabetical order that you left them in previously, so one must click several times to get the stocks in the correct order (simply alphabetical is what I want). This chews up a huge amount of time alone, because again one is having to do it on four different pages to try to view the information one formerly saw alphabetically on one easy-to-view single page. Each time you come back to the site after a new login, the stocks are once again out of order from how you chose to view them. Frustrating! Waste of time! Even more frustrating is that I have been unable to find anywhere on the site a way to choose custom settings that will stay in place for the portfolio, and custom settings that will give you chosen information on the stocks in the portfolio, all of which one could do with the old portfolio. Formerly, you could choose from a menu the categories you wanted to see for your stocks, such as P/E, today's gain, total gain, average daily volume, volume, market cap, 52-week high and low, etc., etc. Now, it seems to have chosen these categories for you, with no opportunity that I can find to choose them or change them. Frustrating! To make things worse, now all of the different portfolios one has with different names, that formerly one could view on one single page to scroll down through, are listed separately via a menu, so that you can only view one portfolio at a time, and one must use a menu bar and choose the separate portfolio each time you want to view a different portfolio. This takes lots of unnecessary, extra time. To heap insult on injury, when one wants to choose a different portfolio, the menu often does not let you view all of your portfolios at once, such that some of them are not viewable and thus not choose-able (I have over 25 different ones); sometimes when you try to scroll further down the list, it will let you, and other times it will not! So I had to discover a method whereby I click on one of the portfolios that I don't want to view but which is further down the list, and once that one is chosen and loaded, then if I click the menu bar again, it will display the remaining portfolios that are further down the list, and I can finally choose the portfolio I need. Can you get a sense for how long it is taking to use the new site? I am probably unusual in having so many portfolios, some with lots of stocks and some with only one or two, but the point is that last week this was all allowed and all so easy to use. Now, it is virtually unusable. Making things even worse, is that the formerly super-quick method they had for entering and updating transactions in one's portfolio, which was done from the single-view main screen, has now been changed to a clunky and inefficient method. It now makes you go to a separate menu that lists all of your stocks in that portfolio, and they are always out of order instead of staying alphabetical or how one chose to view them, so after you spend time getting them in the proper order, or simply waste time scrolling down until you find the proper stock that you need to change the information for, then you enter the data, and then you must scroll back to the top of the page to hit "save". I discovered that much of the data I re-entered (because MSN did not import it all) was not saved, and wondered how this could be, until I found the "save" button at the top right corner of the page, quite out of place from the line on which one is entering data. I assumed that if I entered the data, it would be saved when I left the page because I did not notice a "save" button at first and after all, this is an upgrade right? If they are making me scroll all over the place on a separate page, then surely they have made it easier in some way, right? Wrong. After entering data on a bunch of new lines for separate stocks, I hit "save" once and found that it did not save the data for all of them. So now to be safe I have been entering only one stock at a time, then scrolling to the top of the page and hitting "save" after each stock, then starting on the next stock, and so on. Formerly, from the main single page that showed all of one's stocks and all of one's portfolios in one view, the beauty of the MSN site was that one could simply highlight the stock one wanted to enter new data for, and it would appear at the bottom of the page view so you didn't even have to scroll down, then you could enter your new data and hit a button called "update" or "save" or some such, and you were done, you could view that stock immediately after a quick change and see your new % gain or loss, etc. Now it takes forever as described above going back and forth through multiple pages that put your stocks out of order.
And here is a terrible kicker that could be at the top of the list of indignities and frustrations, but I saved it for (towards) the end: When the new MSN asked me if I wanted to import my stock portfolios from the old MSN, which of course I had to do because I could not view the old portfolios and they were not even making the old portfolios available as an option, I said yes, and when the stocks imported, about half of some of the larger portfolios (which maybe had 50 or 60 stocks) did not import, and some entire portfolios did not import at all (some of these had only 10 stocks or so), and are now apparently lost. So I have been forced to re-enter the data if I want to view them, having to dredge up old brokerage confirmations and add up my cost basis and number of shares, all over again. My only guess is that MSN arbitrarily instituted a mandatory number of stocks per portfolio, and a mandatory number of total stocks across multiple portfolios, and did not tell us users the new rules when they forced us to import to the new system. Instead, they got to decide which stocks and which portfolios were imported, and which were not. As it happened, two of the portfolios that did not import at all to the new system, were ones I relied on quite a bit. MSN did import some old ones I didn't care about so much, that I kept around just to track some stocks I didn't own out of curiosity or to learn about trends. If it isn't new rules that they didn't tell us about, then I can next guess that their software was simply so crummy and so un-tested and never beta-tested, that when they decided to roll it out it was destined to have these kinds of flaws that are maddening to customers. What’s more, I would guess that over 100 stocks that I don’t own but for which I had entered price target data as my price, and the date I made my original price target, did not import and thus these price targets and dates are lost forever to me, potentially, unless MSN allows me to re-import data. I did not make notes on these stocks anywhere else, and in some cases I may not remember the names of the stocks because they were ones I casually tracked. So in the future I will make a copy periodically of the entire list of stocks I track, because sites like MSN cannot be trusted to secure the information.
I can definitely conclude from all of this that MSN doesn’t care about their customers. They cost us untold hours of time re-entering data, and time adjusting to the new site that isn’t better or easier, and drive us away from their site to another site we must now find and spend time getting to know. I am one who for the past 14 years has used not only the portfolio tracker but also has read countless articles on their MSN site, not just on Money but across most of their various pages, such as news, lifestyle, etc. Regularly I would spend time on their various sites, out of loyalty and convenience and because they often piqued my interest. I have often gone to suggested links or third-party providers and advertisers of theirs that I am sure gave MSN lots of revenue due to the clicks I made and services I bought. They are willing to give up a customer like me from the sheer idiocy and flippancy of their behavior regarding their new MSN site. Though I hate to say it, I am sure I am leaving some negative things out which I have bumped into on the new MSN portfolio. How could one detail them all? And I have left out the positives; the only one that comes to mind is that I noticed that the news for each stock is quite more extensive than the previous tracker had. But it will take you longer to find the news because you won’t be alerted if there is “new” news for a stock on any of the four main pages, as formerly you were alerted on the single page with a news icon; now, you must click on the stock from one of the main pages (Summary, Fundamentals, or Portfolio Holdings), and the news will display below a chart and a quote summary that is similar to the old brief quote. The news coverage that shows initially is much more extensive than before and it looks like the team that put this together has worked hard to include (and possibly pay for) some new news feeds.
At first, this "new" MSN struck me as mostly style over substance. Kind of like the MSN political views and spin. The biggest reason for my view of the new portfolio tracker as style over substance is because I had to spend so much time on the frustrating glitches that I did not have any time to spend looking around at the information; I only noticed that I could not find what I wanted easily or quickly. Plus I have been forced to use a new browser just to do this. And to be sure, in many cases you are going to have to click and browse and scroll a lot more across multiple pages now, to get what you got quickly before or could get all in one place with the former “Print Report” feature which I haven’t found yet but hopefully it survived, or even with the former “Basic Quote” feature which had quite a bit of info accessible right from the Basic Quote page. However, now that I am making this post and needed to check whether my style over substance claim was true, I have discovered just now that the new MSN Money site does have many great features and information for individual stocks. For one, they finally included “Last Dividend + (Ex-Date)” and “Dividend Declaration Date”, on the new fundamentals page. I used to always go to separate websites to find that information because MSN didn’t seem to have it. The Fundamentals page has a stock chart at the top along with a summary quote section, all news, and then down below it has 7 menu items to click on (Key Statistics, Growth, Profitability, Financial Health, Price Ratios, Trading Statistics, and Management Effectiveness), all of which have helpful information, some of which was not easily found before unless one did “Print Report” and scrolled down to it all, plus many new categories; now, you have to do more clicking but they are giving you more information than before for each click. Also, if you continue to scroll down, you get Company Profile, Mutual Fund Ownership, a Financials section that includes a written summary and a bar chart with revenue, net income, and profit margin displayed for a six-year span. If you scroll down all the way to the bottom, you get categories on the left, some new ones like Options Chain and Immersive Charts, along with Financial Statements, Historical Prices, and Insider Trades. I would prefer to have Financial Statements and Insider Trades more accessible with a menu click up above (as on the old “Basic Quote” page), but at least they are still here, though they will take longer to access now. The Insider Trades section is still weak as before, listing many things as NA without explanation and not allowing one to see the function of the insider, so Yahoo Finance’s Insider section is still much better, but hey, maybe MSN will eventually upgrade this just as they have apparently tried to equal Yahoo Finance on so many other of these Fundamentals categories. So MSN deserves kudos for making great improvements to the information sections. Now we know how they were spending their time when they neglected to include browser support and thorough importing of the old portfolio data, etc. At least they were busy improving much of the Money site. So I have to walk back a little bit of my negative comments, though I stick to the ones regarding how they treated their customers and how they put asunder the effectiveness of their portfolio tracker, which is after all the main reason I used MSN Money. Re treatment of customers: That is just it...they have the Microsoft mindset of the past 20 years, that we are users, not customers. Remember how their OS terms you on a PC...a user. That is their mindset, and thus the user is only a user and must conform to whatever Microsoft decides to do or not to do at any time. It’s the anti-Mac ethic. Eventually millions upon millions of customers got tired of being treated like users, in all aspects of the software and how it treated people and simple tasks and during new rollouts, and they switched in droves to Mac systems where they were treated like customers in virtually every detail, including new rollouts.
You had to give MSN credit before in one respect--they had simply the best, free, most user-friendly, user-driven, efficient, fully functional portfolio tracker out there, or at least one of them. They have destroyed the greatness of their old portfolio tool, simply put it asunder, but have improved the information accessible via the portfolio. You can tell they don't care about the portfolio items I mentioned, just like they didn't care that they rolled it out without proper warning and inconvenienced millions of people with its disfunctionality. It seems to me they assume everyone wants to view everything on their mobile devices, so they re-formatted their portfolio tracker to work better for that and be viewable for that and to load quickly on such devices which means less information per page view, which is the major drawback of the new portfolio tracker because most of us want MORE information per page view. They took away the best features that made it great and that worked incredibly well on a personal computer. And when you think about it, there is really no reason they could not keep the same features as before, and make them viewable and quickly loadable on portable devices. Why would anyone want to click through dozens of pages and wait for them to load on a mobile device when they could click through two or three instead and get the same information? My guess is this new MSN was designed by millenials, or others who don't see the big picture, whose attitude is that mobile is everything and a clean look is better than actual information (even in the Information Age)and anyone who doesn't have the right device or browser to view it, should get with the program. And I say this as one who would also like to use my smartphone to view MSN and my portfolios. They seem not to care about long-time MSN users. I have been using the MSN portfolio tracker since ~ 2001. A year or two or three ago they pulled a similar stunt when they upgraded their site and I could not access things for a week or two, but they kept the functionality and wonderful features, so I stayed despite some inner protestations that I should find a different service, because they had actually made things better as I found after a learning curve. This time, the hubris, inattentiveness, and sheer lack of consideration for MSN users, and the fact they have made things so much worse in terms of efficiency and functionality, has led me to try to find a better service.
I sent many messages to the MSN feedback team, including a couple of times asking if I could re-import the data from my old portfolio and explaining how so much of my data did not import. Still no answer. So I have chosen to manually start entering the more important data at MSN, while I also switch to a different service. I have also been forced to search to find a new portfolio service and spend hours entering data there.
What I have started with is through the Forbes website, and is called Wikinvest, which has no problem letting me use the Safari browser. They have a FREE portfolio tracker which has lots of user-driven choices, and allows a mostly one-page view of all of one's differently-named portfolios, that is easy to scroll through up and down. Wikinvest allows you to click in the row of the stock and change share data by clicking on that number, and enter the cost basis for a stock by clicking on that, if you have # of shares and cost basis chosen as columns, without having to navigate to a separate page, which I like as a time-saver. I am having trouble with their % price change column showing most every stock as having a 0% change, or showing the % change briefly and then switching it to 0%, even though there are significant price changes. So I have contacted their support team and so far they not responded after two days. I let them know that I will find another service if they can't rectify this. They seem to want to force the user to link their brokerage account with Wikinvest, as a trade in effect, for giving the Wikinvest user real-time data as well as some more advanced portfolio analytics. But why can't they give the user real-time data which is available to anyone on any of a thousand websites? It is so much more convenient and efficient for the user to see the price change % on their portfolio tracker...that is part of why one uses a tracker! And what does Wikinvest stand to gain from forcing the user to link their brokerage accounts with Wikinvest? One has to wonder! Probably they target marketing to people based upon their income or holdings, and get paid by a third party who gets to do the marketing. Just a guess. With the current rate of weekly catastrophic security breaches in our society, there is no way I am linking my Wikinvest portfolios with any actual brokerage accounts. Besides, 95% of the stocks I track are not owned in any brokerage account, and are just ones I track as possibilities. So will Wikinvest deny real-time data to 95% of the stocks I track but can't link to a brokerage account because they aren't held in a brokerage account?
However, if one desires to have their brokerage account(s) linked to Wikinvest and doesn’t mind the potential security risk, this linking service is offered for free, and will save the user from having to manually enter data for stocks they own, including changes, which will automatically update to Wikinvest. So this would be a big time-saver for that type of customer. Also, the news column in the portfolio tracker on Wikinvest is not the greatest, much of it is out of date and not seemingly in touch with the same major sources or providers that MSN's portfolio tracker has. Also, I don't like the way the portfolio displays on Wikinvest nearly so much as that at MSN, but this could be simply because I am used to the MSN site. And I don't like how Wikinvest does NOT allow one to highlight a stock's row and keep it highlighted, so when going across the page one can see the row highlighted and keep track of it if it spills slightly onto the right side off the page. MSN has this simple feature. Also, Wikinvest’s screen view does not show you column headers if you have a lot of stocks listed without a new portfolio to break them up, such that you spend a lot of time scrolling back to the top to sew what the column headers are. Wikinvest does allow an almost limitless number of columns of informational categories to display across the entire page, which you can widen to show all of them (something MSN did not allow). This is important to me so a great plus. One thing they don't have which I am requesting is Average Daily Volume. I haven’t browsed much of the informational sections on Wikinvest, but what I have seen so far is impressive.
Bottom Line: The old MSN portfolio tracker was vastly better than the new one in terms of efficiently viewing the stocks in one’s portfolio, making changes, and quickly viewing and accessing a lot of information. The new MSN portfolio’s informational pages via MSN Money are better in some ways than the old ones, though it seems to take longer to see the new information. Wikinvest’s portfolio tracker is versatile and easy to use, approaching the efficiency of the old MSN tracker, though it may have issues in denying users real-time data if they don’t directly link their brokerage accounts with Wikinvest. The fact that Wikinvest is not accurately giving intraday and end-of-day price change data to a commonly-used Mac browser, is discouraging. Perhaps this bug will be worked out, but after nearly a week the Wikinvest support team has not responded to requests for help on this, another discouraging sign. Wikinvest appears to have some powerful stock information pages linked to their portfolio tracker, but more investigation is needed. For now, I plan to use both MSN and Wikinvest to see which one can most quickly provide me with useful information on individual stocks. My early guess is that I will end up using the Wikinvest portfolio tracker (or another better one I’ve yet to discover) to get a handle on what is happening with the stocks I track because its one-page view is so much easier for someone tracking a large number of stocks in multiple portfolios. And, I will likely continue to use MSN for its information on individual stocks in concert with other sites like Yahoo Finance, as I have done in the past.
Does anyone know of an even better portfolio tracker website out there, even if it charges a fee?
Has anyone had any experience with Yahoo Finance’s portfolio tracker?
Thank you,

2014-10-06T02:17:53+00:00 Removing MSN from the IE 9 compatibility view list will solve the problem ONLY for IE 9. IE 11 is not affected and Firefox's latest version is not affected. IE 11 will display the new MSN properly whether or not MSN is listed in the compatibility view list, which brings up the question "if Microsoft can make IE 9 compatible with the new MSN, IE 9 being an "outdated" browser, why can't MSN make the other "outdated" browsers "compatible" with the new MSN? Well, the answer is simple. MSN chooses not to do so. MSN has orphaned all other "outdated" browsers, even though they may be up to date in their respective operating systems, as your IE 9 is "outdated" in your operating system. Your solution is a solution to your IE 9 problem only and will not help others. MSN needs to make their new website backward compatible with these other browsers or stop sniffing for the User Agent strings of their "preferred" browsers.
I may or may not be able to see any reply to this in my email account as Microsoft's email server, https://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync\_v2.0.0/Sync.aspx, was down for most of yesterday (China time) and continues to be down at this time, evidenced by this when i checked:
mail.services.live.com seems to be down!
We got a 404 response code with an ip of 157.56.19.86.
Get your act together, Microsoft. I have no problem sending or receiving emails in my other non-Microsoft email accounts. The only way for me to see new posts and replies is to bookmark this page in my Pale Moon browser and check the bookmark periodically.
