Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T 8.1 Update

Currently, after the 8.1 update, Internet Explorer doesn't work, office is slow, the desktop is slow, and I have a whole host of other problems. Samsung says I need to pay $40 to reimage, but the only reason I updated was because it said this device is compatible at this web address: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en\_US/pdp/Samsung-ATIV-Smart-PC-500T-Tablet-White/productID.265664500.

Both Microsoft and Samsung refuse to refund the $40 charge that is necessary to make my computer work again, and I cannot access the recovery partition on my Samsung device. It is there, just not accessible. Anyone who has information on how to solve this issue, if you could give me an answer it would be greatly appreciated.

I started my own thread trying to get this resolved and sent an email to realtek.

I have researched the way drivers are handled a little bit and since this driver will work until its time to reboot, I have been disabling the device in device manager before shutting the tablet down, then after booting up I enable it again, this has allowed to to function but is a pain. But that being said drivers are handle in a couple of different ways, some are loaded as the system is initializing and some are as plug and play (or loaded on demand) after the system is booted up. It seems to me that this driver can function as plug and play since that is what I am doing manually through device manager, if someone could write the configuration file for the driver to operate like that it might solve the issue.

Anyone know how to do that?

So to be clear: It is a driver configuration error, the driver for the realtek hardware is causing the system to hang during boot.

If your system is hanging, you must restart in safe mode, then go to device manager and disable to the realtek sound device. Then reboot in normal mode and again enable the sound device, thendo not shut down the tablet unless you disable the sound device first.

I keep the tablet in sleep mode when I am not using it, it will wake up fine, but if you shut it down without disabling you will have to do the safe mode thing again. Until they fix the driver this is the only way to have the tablet function with sound.

Jacob, On Windows 8, the first High Def Aud Device (under Microsoft) installed, but didn't work, and update to 8.1 failed as usual. The second High Def Aud Device got me the same meesage you got. Next, (being a schizophrenic maniac...trying the same thing twice, expecting a different result), I deactivated the HD Audio Device, updated to 8.1 and failed. Now, for the second time, because I have tried every possible angle from 8.0, I had Windows automatically search for driver updates, giving me the RealTek driver, which I then uninstalled, leaving me only with the blue tooth audio, and ... eureka...the update worked. Once I get all the 8.1 updates installed, I'm going to respond to Samsung, give them my results, and ask them to tell me how to get the sound to work again. I'm hoping that this different approach will get me a little further. (Can't update from 8.0 vs Sound doesn't work in 8.1.)

Good luck. I've spend months trying both angles, with no luck. Samsung refuses to update their RealTek driver.

What's REALLY strange... is that, people were posting that they had audio working just fine for this device in Windows 8.1 ... until some March updates messed it up, causing the behavior we see.

I wonder if the real issue is a Microsoft one. At this point, I don't really know. And I've exhausted my means to try to fix it. It's not even my tablet, it's my Dad's. And now I get to tell him "Hey, I got Windows 8.1 on it, but now you have no sound. That's life."

I really wish Microsoft and Samsung would step up here, to perform a formal investigation.

It's impossible to tell whether it was a Samsung, RealTek or Windows update in March that caused the problem. In my response, I'm going to mention that, and suggest that because someone updated something in March that caused this, an official investigation should be started (haha.) I can actually give a date it happened to me because I was on vacation, preparing for a speaking engagement in San Antonio.

And now...the rest of the story. Once all updates were installed, the Samsung SW wanted me to install their sound driver, which I did, which caused unstability, and a freeze-up at next re-start. I was able to SafeBoot, and get back to point in Windows 8.1 that didn't have soundcard driver installed. I have let Samsung know my results of their suggestion, asked them how to get my sound to work, and suggested they open an official inquiry, and include both RealTek and Microsoft in their research of a solution.

In the meantime, for those who want Windows 8.1, and sound, there are a couple of work-arounds. I have a headset that works through a USB port (Logitech), and, secondly, I also have an external soundcard that plugs into USB port. The soundcard has an audio input and output that works fine. either one works. The bluetooth driver still works though, so you can always use bluetooth speakers or headset.
