Windows 8.1 Product Key and Activation

About a week ago, I downloaded Windows 8.1 from MS Store. This was an upgrade for Windows 8 which came installed on my new HP PC.

The download was successful and Win 8.1 installed. However, Win 8.1 did not get activated and I keep getting a reminder screen to Activate Win 8.1.

This Activate Screen asks me to enter a Product Key. It gives me an error code of 0xc004c003 which states that the activation server has blocked my product key. It also gives the last five(5) characters of the blocked product key.

Well, I never entered a product key during the upgrade so I'm not sure where the product key came from.

I did a web search for the last five characters of the product key and it appears to be all over the web.

I used an application that showed the last fifteen(15) characters of the product key in my PC for Win 8.1 and they match the product key that I found all over the web.

It's no wonder that MS has blocked this key.

My question is. How do I activate Windows 8.1 since I have no product key.  MS Store did not provide a key with the download.

The product key used on that system is likely an OEM volume license product key, provided to the OEM for mass installation on systems like that.

You never stated the make/model of the system in question, so I ask directly: what is the make & model of the system all of this is occurring on and what ave they told you when contacting them for support?

This is NOT an issue of warranty.  They (the OEM) sold you the OS as part of the entire system and part of that is the ability to continue to utilize the OS on that system indefinitely and upgrade it as appropriate to maintain security/usability.  Windows 8.1 is not so much a new version of WIndows as it is a service pack for Windows 8.1 - so you should happily be able to use Windows 8 or 8.1 on said system if it was sold originally with Windows 8.

See if the UEFI (likely) BIOS holds the product key:

Aside: why did you just copy an earlier posting/reply word-for-word?

Hi read what I said about getting the download, and then and only then uninstall windows 8 and then reinstall windows 8.1. This problem of not upgrading is because you bought a machine from someone like HP that forces you to do things including updates thru them. If they fail to do something then tough you will not get it. The only way is to totally remove the Fixed 8 from say HP and then reinstall with the D/L version for installation from MS. After that everything "should" work properly including updates. It seems that most vendors of machines like HP do this stunt and then want paying to do something that is free!

The very reason I get machines that need the software that I want to put in. See someone like https://www.novatech.co.uk/modifier.html?s=NNB-B87
