Windows 8.1: System Image Backup of C: drive fails, Error 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D

Hello everyone.

I've a lot of people encounter problems similar to this, but here is my particular flavour:

I have a Windows 8.1. Pro (64 bit) desktop PC.

I am trying to use File History > System Image Backup to create a backup image of my C: drive.

I have been trying to save the backup both an external USB 3.0 drive, and this time to a network location (on a WD 'MyCloud' EX4 NAS)

Every time, the backup fails about 3/4 of the way through.

I get an error dialog saying

"The backup failed.  The operation failed due to a device error encountered either with the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation. (0x8078012D)Additional Information: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (0x8007045D)"

I've spent many hours diligently running CHKDSK /R  both on my C:\ and the destination drives, and it has never once found any problems.

I've tried closing all applications, unnecessary services, background processes and disabling Windows Defender's real time malware checking whilst the backup takes place, but that doesn't seem to fix anything.

My hunch is that there's nothing wrong with the disks or hardware at all, and that this is some kind of obscure permissions problem, where Windows can't access symbolic links on my C: drive.

But I basically haven't a clue! :) 

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions at fixing this, as currently I don't have any backup image of my C:\ drive, so if my PC goes kaputt, I'll have days of manual re-installing and configuring to do.

    Good point about questioning whether restoring from an image backup works.  I actually haven't had occasion to try it yet for Windows 8.1, but I have gotten Windows 7 image backups successfully restored after a drive failure...to the identical make/model/size of drive.  Because the Windows 7 image backup saved me in the past, I pin hopes on image backups in general.  But I should take the time to test the Windows 8.1 image restore, to see if I should invest in a third-party solution.

    After investing about two days and nights just getting the backup to work (chkdsk /r and the WD test take quite awhile), I'll have to schedule some time for testing restore.

    Not only does it take time, but one has to have a spare drive or purchase another drive to restore to.  Don't want to restore to source, because it could be destroyed in process if either image isn't ok, recovery has bugs or for other glitches...

    Again, thanks for your time and additional info about images working in Win 7.

    All this effort to get system image backups to work.

    Has anyone on these threads every successfully performed a restore using image backup?

    I've abandoned microsoft system image backups forever.

    I have absolutely no confidence in:

    a. the image backup process

    b. the image once it has been backed up

    c. the restore process

    d. nor drive once it's been restored

    
I'm using Acronis True Image 2014 which I've used to clone drives and it worked multiple times on following:

a. from smaller drive  to larger drive

b. from larger   drive  to smaller drive

While I've made disk image backups with Acronis True Image 2014, I have yet to confirm I can successfully restore using the disk image backup.

For now cloning works and that is all I truly care about.

    I've also successfully used " dd " command from Ubuntu 14.04 to:

    a. clone drive to drive directly numerous times since I last been on this thread.

    b. make compressed drive image backups

    c. restored from image backup

    I created a Live Ubuntu USB thumb drive which I can use to boot off any PC that has a USB port.

    
I also discovered ZTC Sky board mSATA to USB3 enclosure

Get average read speed of 275MB/s.

I've used this enclosure to successfully clone mSATA drives both ways:

a. from mSATA in enclosure to mSATA in laptop

b. from mSATA in laptop      to mSATA in enclosure

    Did following and was able to boot from ZTC enclosure:

    Had a 1TB mSATA from another system running Win 8.1 that was fully configured and customized. The system is exactly same as another system I have except CPU is faster in 2nd system.

    1. Took 1TB mSATA from 1st system.
    2. Put 1TB mSATA in this ZTC enclosure.
    3. Plugged ZTC enclosure into 2nd system

    a. Dell XPS 15 9530

    b. USB3 Super Speed port

    1. Power up laptop
    2. Pressed F12
    3. Selected enclosure JMicron and system booted right up.
    4. Win 8.1 touch screen very responsive.
    5. All other operations very responsive.
    6. No more worrying about drive failing.

    I will keep clone in one of these enclosures so I will always be able to boot immediately in event of drive hardware failure.   I can also clone from enclosure to laptop and be up in few minutes, not hours.

    No more lost time.

    No more lost productivity.

    No more lost files, data, nor licenses.

    No more lost system nor application configurations.

    No more distraction nor frustration.

    I cannot explain peace of mind I now have because my system is highly customized and configured and if drive was lost ( misbehaves, failed or died ) I now have a bootable clone that has been confirmed and ready to go. Just plug enclosure in, restart system, select boot from enclosure and I'm up and running immediately with " EVERYTHING " intact. Not hours nor days later.

    This is way better than making some backup image or clone and " ASSUMMING " they are good. So many people, even companies, backup their data, make backup images of drive or even clone drives, but never verify backups and clones because of time it takes to do so.

    Another nice thing about having this enclosure is I don't have to open laptop and swap drives. Just clone to enclosure, then immediately boot from enclosure to confirm.

    This enclosure solves one of my backup issues.

    Can clone mSATA inside laptop to mSATA in ZTC enclosure,then boot from mSATA in the ZTC enclosure to validate cloning worked.

    Sorry to deflate your enthusiasm for this product, but "Acronis True Image 2014" is just a GUI front end for exact same Microsoft 'Volume Shadow Copy Service' (VSS) backup service that you don't trust!

    Never had an issue with Windows system image. You can't use a older version of the recovery console to restore a new version of an is image. Like 8 can't restore a 8.1

    At least I didn't have any luck. But the only time I tried was on a laptop that had a broken monitor and only an hdmi port so I couldn't see what I was doing except in a little corner. But other then that its worked everytime. You can't really go from a larger drive to a smaller drive if you really want to I guess it is possible but it can cause issue down the road making all the images useless.
