just got my apps up and running. After logging on black screen appears with curser only so you need to do the following.

1..........press  ctrl + alt + del

2..........click on task manager

3..........in task manager click on file drop box opens

4..........then click on new task when it opens

5..........type in   msconfig    in the open box

6..........click ok and system configuration box comes up

7..........click on tools a list opens

8..........click on restore reset to earlier date ( bottom of the list ) a box opens restore to this date, but

9..........you need to click on choose earlier date select the earliest date available

and that's it worked for me none of the fixes worked I tried most of them and got more and more frustrated

hope this works for you

Hi Kumar,

Please try the following troubleshooting:

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del
  2. Do a left click on the power option at the bottom right of the screen
  3. Press and hold down the 'Shift' Key and do a left click on Restart, you should be seeing 'Please Wait'
  4. Click on Troubleshoot=> Advance Options=> StartUp Settings=> Restart
  5. Post Restart the same Blue Screen will appear with a list options, once have that screen in front of you, push the 'Number 5' on your Keyboard, in a couple of seconds you should be in 'Safe Mode with Networking'
  6. Go to Control Panel=> Programs and Features, scroll down and look for "Search Protect"..
  7. Uninstall "Search Protect" and then perform a Clean Boot
  8. After you have performed a Clean Boot, you should be able to boot to the desktop...

I Hope it Helps...Please revert for any further questions...

What were you doing (or attempting to do) before you turned your laptop off for the day?

    Try this ......

    o  Remove the laptop battery.

o  Remove the AC adapter (power) cord from your laptop.

o  Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds.  (this will drain any static electricity that has

built up on your system board)

o  After 30 seconds, reconnect the power cord.

o  press the power button normally and see if the laptop starts.

o  if not, hold down the power button and then try again.

    o  Replace the battery.

I have a desktop HP Pavilion model computer and I have had this exact same problem today.  Still cannot get past my sign-in page as I only get a blank black screen with my mouse/cursor displayed on it.  I just got off the phone with a $100 charge for Cox technical assistance.  They took control of my computer and checked all drivers and all other possible issues for me.  The result was:  I paid them $100 for a final analysis that they believe the problem is being caused by the operating system (Windows 8.1) as they could find no cause in my hardware or software.  This problem just started for me yesterday evening (8/25/2014).  It is definitely not a battery or static cause of the problem.  Help, please someone (Microsoft, what did you do with your latest updates to 8.1?)

exact same problem, does anyone have a solution; i have tried to remove the battery.did not work.

Have you been able to restart the system?

It sounds like Windows Explorer (the process that handles your desktop functions like the Start Screen, Task Bar, Charms Bar, etc.) has stopping working or is not running.

You should be able to turn off the computer and turn it back on again and the problem should be fixed!

If you are in the middle of something and are unable to save, there is another way:

    Try restarting Windows Explorer:

    1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del
    2. Select the Task Manager
    3. Locate, in the bottom right corner, "More details" and click it
    4. Scroll down until you find a program named "Windows Explorer"
    5. Right-click it and select "Restart"

    Hope this helps!

i have the same black screen problem. Solution does not work as i do not see "windows explorer"
