can't update to 8.1 0xc1900101-0x20017

Tried to the new release 8.1 today 10/17.  My desktop was successful, but my laptop failed with can't update to 8.1 0xC1900101-0x20017.

I have read a clean install may be required. I have just installed windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 about one month ago. Is there a way of downloading an ISO image for 8.1 and a key to due a clean install of 8.1 without paying $150.

The laptop is a ASUS U43F with a Crucial M500 960GB SSD.

    I've been fussing with this since '13 to no avail.  Most recently, I pulled my exiting HD and replaced with new SSD, flashed the bios on the U43F to 216, and used ISO copy of 8.1 provided by MS.  Same issue.  Changed several settings in bios to disable functions to no avail.  Concluded, like many, that it is a driver issue and sadly, neither MS nor ASUS (most likely ASUS) has any vested interest in fixing this problem on what was a low volume product.  Works fine on 8.0...maybe will work with 9.0? (but not holding my breath).

    Hi Tom_9999, Yes is disappointing that we cannot upgrade our U43F Asus to 8.1. I am using 8.0 and will not try anymore attempts to 8.1 unless someone out there claims success. I am happy with 8.0 on my laptop but would love to upgrade to 8.1. Windows 9 is around the corner and I will try it. Keep us posted if you discover the magic bullet to solve this problem.

    I have downloaded the Windows 10 Technical Preview in hopes that I can update my ASUS U43F running Windows 8.

    It unfortunately is showing the same error. Blue Screen saying DRIVER_VIOLATION....

    I guess theres no hope in upgrading past Windows 8

    Unfortunately, it's the same case when it comes to ASUS X59SR (F-series). Windows 8 can be installed but 8.1, 8.1 Update and even Windows 10 TP can't . 

    After the Windows logo appears on the screen, about ten seconds later, "DRIVER_VIOLATION" error displays in BSOD. And then the laptop restarts.

    I mentioned about this matter nine months ago. But Windows Developers just ignored it. "Widows 8.1 with Update" was released and the problem hasn't been fixed yet.

    Although this problem shows itself in many ASUS laptop models, like Dennis C. Johnson said, "it's obvious that Microsoft or Asus care about whether this is solved or not".

    Is Windows 10 really important to Microsoft? How important? If Win10 really is that important, they should fix this problem. I mentioned the same issue to Win10 Preview Feedback on TechNet. We will see how important Windows 10 really is.
