Tried to the new release 8.1 today 10/17. My desktop was successful, but my laptop failed with can't update to 8.1 0xC1900101-0x20017.
I have read a clean install may be required. I have just installed windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 about one month ago. Is there a way of downloading an ISO image for 8.1 and a key to due a clean install of 8.1 without paying $150.
The laptop is a ASUS U43F with a Crucial M500 960GB SSD.

I noticed that in the Windows 10 upgrade notification that when I check my laptop for the upgrade it says that it is upgrade-able but there may be problems. The problem seems to be something with a device call Glance Speed Boost. It also states that there will be problems with the video adapter, yet I cannot find anything on the laptop concerning Speed Boost. ( i.e Device manager, Programs and Features) Ant one else experienced this on an ASUS U43F?

Why would I want a touchscreen I just want to run a version of Windows that Works.
XP was OK but is now not supported.
Vista was a joke.
Windows 7 Worked but is next on the chopping block.
Windows 8 was a bad attempt of touch screen technology.
Windows 8.1 is where I want to be before Microsoft starts taxing everyone with 10.

This issue seems to be a compatibility issue with something in the Asus configuration that neither Asus or Microsoft seem committed to resolving. I would flush the Asus laptop and move on to a newer laptop. That's what I did. I bought a new Acer laptop and use my old Asus laptop for a teleprompter in a video recording studio I've set up for online training I do.
if you're really serious about moving to Windows 10, you need a new laptop with touch screen capability to take advantage of it in my opinion. I would be cautious about moving to Windows 10; however, it seems clear that Microsoft is going to begin charging annual subscription fees to users after the first year. If you move to Windows 10, you could be paying annual subscription renewals forever after the first year.
Maybe that might fund a better level of support.
Hi Tim, Just tried ISO DVD clean installs with Windows 10 Build 10074 and Build 10130 still no joy. Both crash early in the install shortly after Install starts up. You can see the install circle start to draw the first dot on Build 10074 or first two dots on Build 10130 before getting "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTON_NOT_HANDLED"
error and aborting the install.
This looks to be much sooner than the windows 8.1 update crash that looks like it close to the end of the install.
I wish Microsoft and/or ASUS would resolve this issue for Windows 10 final release in July.
I am with you windows 8 was bad and I would hate to be stuck at that version with a high end laptop.
Ubuntu latest version works fine.
Hi Russell, I tried many thing and posted in this blog, did not have anyone respond with a successful install to 8.1, I just use 8.0 and waiting for someone to find a solution, I spent too much time trying to solve this problem, best wishes
