I'm concerned about having a machine in a broken state going forward, though.

here's what I ran:

 get error 87 when I run the above statement in command prompt running as admin.

Make sure that the cmd window title is:  Administrator: Command Prompt.

Also, I don't think case is a factor but all the help does show it so it may be an idea to fix that too.

Here is another related command which could give you more information

    Dism.exe  /Online  /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Otherwise use the  DISM.log  to find out what is going on.  You could also run ProcMon to help find and supplement any other diagnostics which are available.

    I have exactly the same problem!

    The issue arose when I did a "Disk Cleanup" (cleanmgr.exe). I wiped more than 700 Mb worth of Windows Update Backup files.

    To check, I restore my Windows 8.1 to a previously full disk saved image.

    The DISM /ScanHealth result was : Healthy.

    Then I ran the Important Update for a second time this week (large and multiple Important Security Update about 800 Mb).

    After a successful update and restart I ran DISM /ScanHealth again and the result was still : Healthy.

    Then I did a Disk Cleanup again (cleanmgr.exe). It deleted the Windows Update Backup files again.

    The DISM /ScanHealth is now : Repairable.

    The DISM /RestoreHealth is now : restore operation failed. Repair source was not found or the comp

    onent store cannot be repaired.

    When I run SFC /Scannow, there is no corruption, but if (or rather WHEN) it will happen, DISM or Repair-WindowsImage will not be able to fix it, I'm afraid.

    Microsoft, the ball is in your camp to fix this. Good luck to us!

    Hi,

    • Why did you run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool?

    Generally, we will get this error 0x800F081F when there is any corruption in the system file. Let’s run the system file checker scan and check if there are any corrupt system files.

    SFC (System File Checker) is a tool which scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

    Refer the following article for more information on using SFC tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files:

    You may also try this command and see if it makes any difference.

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    Hi,

    You may try the check disk utility from command prompt and check if it makes any difference.

    a. In the desktop screen, press Windows key + R.

    b. Type: CMD, right click CMD then click Run as administrator.

    d. At the Command Prompt, type: chkdsk /r /f

    e. Exit the command prompt.

    f. When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and attempts will be made to correct them.

    Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

    I've been running those commands endlessly forever,

    nothing is wrong, but *something* is wrong.

    sfc is fine

    chkdsk is fine.

    Scanhealth and checkhealth say "repairable"

    Only "restorehealth" totally dies.

    I have read access to c:\recovery.

    The summary of the OP is excellent.

    as to "why", I could not, no matter what, install the windows update KB2919355.

    It installed finally using DISM.

    Windows Update (apparently) works great now,

    But DISM insists something is wrong, it just cannot find what it is or where it is.

    0x800f081f or numbers similar (that was from memory).
