I'm concerned about having a machine in a broken state going forward, though.

here's what I ran:

 get error 87 when I run the above statement in command prompt running as admin.

Make sure that the cmd window title is:  Administrator: Command Prompt.

Also, I don't think case is a factor but all the help does show it so it may be an idea to fix that too.

Here is another related command which could give you more information

    Dism.exe  /Online  /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Otherwise use the  DISM.log  to find out what is going on.  You could also run ProcMon to help find and supplement any other diagnostics which are available.

    Hi,

    I would suggest you to follow these steps on the computer that has the issue without re-installing Windows 8.1:

    a. In the desktop screen, press Windows key + R.

    b. Type: CMD, right click CMD then click Run as administrator.

    c. At the Command Prompt, type the following command:

    dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    This will remove the KB2919355 package from the component store.

    Once it is done, type the following command:

    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

    Now, refer to the link and try to install KB2919355.

    Quick, before my senility kicks in:

    It's got something to do with a new feature called "Wimboot", available to updated 8.1 (i.e. "8.1.1)

    computers.

    A wim file, an updated one, with all the bleeding-edge updates, is manually installed using DISM to the recovery partition.

    Then all the generic [useless] advice about reinstalling etc suddenly becomes pearls of wisdom.

      It sounds easy enough but I get stuck on instructions referring me to "C:\images" which doesn't actually exist (yet). I think they skipped a step.

    --

    Yes, I use a SSD

    Yes, I am updated

    Yes, I use UEFI

    (at this point I start to fail)

    No there is no C:\images, I prolly need an instruction sheet to put the current (online) image there.

    No, I'm too scared to update an already updated WIM.

    So [wild guessing redacted], DISM is looking for [redacted], which doesn't actually exist.

    I'm concerned about having a machine in a broken state going forward, though.

    here's what I ran:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS>dism /online /cleanup-image /restoreHealth

    any idea what's going on?

    What's going on is that you're running the command from the wrong location,

    You need to be in C:\Windows\System32, not C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

    where you run the command from doesn't matter.  I have 4 Win 8.1.1 PCs -- it works from anywhere because the OS knows where the servicing stuff is located & things are in the path.  The update trashed only 1 of them. 

    And I did confirm that the 0x800f081f error seemingly will prevent future updates.  The one patch they've released that updates ntfs.sys in an attempt to fix it on boxes that can't even install update 1 -- well, I tried that on the box getting errors & it said it was invalid for the OS.  Then I tried the same patch on an 8.1.1 box that /restoreHealth came back clean on and I got the message it's already installed.

    I've already reinstalled my one screwed-up box, but it appears that unless MS fixes this issue, even people with 8.1.1 but with this error may be looking at a reinstall.  I'm fortunate in that I have a DVD.  It's the folks who have only the OEM installation & no way to install from a DVD that are really going to be hurting.
