I'm concerned about having a machine in a broken state going forward, though.

here's what I ran:

 get error 87 when I run the above statement in command prompt running as admin.

Make sure that the cmd window title is:  Administrator: Command Prompt.

Also, I don't think case is a factor but all the help does show it so it may be an idea to fix that too.

Here is another related command which could give you more information

    Dism.exe  /Online  /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Otherwise use the  DISM.log  to find out what is going on.  You could also run ProcMon to help find and supplement any other diagnostics which are available.

    Yeah, I agree. I was just tossing anything out there. My computer seems to be working fine right now other than this issue. I'm not going to toss it and buy a new one just based on this. But if my computer starts acting up and it's not a simple thing to fix it, then I think I may be ready to try something different - a Mac.

    Since Microsoft has not publicly acknowledged this DISM problem as a "known issue" in any Knowledgebase article (at least that I, or any posters here are aware of), I doubt that it will be addressed anytime soon, if at all.  But, since we don't know if the component store corruption is "real" or if the reported corruption error is just a bug in the DISM utility, all we can go with is how well your system is functioning.

    In case any future problems arise as a result of this issue, you can always decide what to do then.  But, unless you're really set on switching to a Mac, spending about $100 on a Windows 8.1 retail DVD for a repair install is a lot less costly than buying a new PC.  And, even with a new PC, you've got to re-install all you programs and their license keys, transfer all your data files, possibly re-install device drivers for your peripherals and reconfigure all your personalized settings.  At least for me, that's more than $100 worth of my time, versus the in-place repair install.

    Hi GRBU2,

    On another Microsoft forum, Susan Bradley also agreed to open a case on May 2nd and I e-mailed her with all the info.  I never heard back from anyone at Microsoft and by now, I don't expect I ever will!

    Regarding the options you mentioned:

    1. If you trust the source of the download, I guess it's OK, as long as you make a backup image first.

        I'd be happy to upload mine, but it's only 32-bit.

    1. Not a good option, most everything will be lost.
    2. If they do, they'll likely never admit it and just bury it in some future update.
    3. I've seem the core (non-pro) on sale, even Amazon has them.  Certainly the safest, easiest, but most

        expensive option.  Buying a new PC or Mac?  Perhaps a bit extreme for what may be a bogus problem.

    Susan Bradley has offered to help me out by submitting a case number. I told her many thanks, but want to hold off until I see some success with someone who has done this. I've seen too many people state they've been on the phone for 4 hours or so and nothing gets fixed. I can't continue to give this amount of time to this issue. Maybe if my computer starts really acting up I'll do this, but I really need to stop taking so much time on these issues (my family is hating me for it).

    I haven't gotten to my PC vendor yet (Toshiba) but I'm out of warranty at this point. Plus I need an 8.1 ISO, not an 8.0 ISO right? I guess I could get a product key for a retail 8.0 ISO and then run through the same steps in the links??? Man, this gets confusing.

    I don't have Pro on my computer. But, it appears in order to fix it at this time I need to one of the following . . .

    1. Find an applicable configuration 8.1 ISO (a poster on the link I attached above seems to think they are readily available amongst friends/family or software forums) and then do the repair install.
    2. Refresh/reset my computer back to 8.0 (though a poster on the other thread says NOT to do this) and then reinstall 8.1 and all the following updates and then maybe reinstall drivers, programs and documents (I've seen some people say the refresh or reset doesn't work when you've upgraded to 8.1 from 8.0). Basically days worth of work.
    3. Microsoft fixes this with a patch (I HOPE THIS!!!).
    4. Or buy a retail copy of 8.1 myself (as you state) or just buy a new computer/Mac.
