This error may appear for multiple reasons. Some common causes are VPN clients and an unexpected System Reserved Partition size.

Try removing any VPN Clients and attempt the update again.

You might be able to fix this problem by using third-party software to increase the size of the System Reserved partition.

If you have tried both solutions and you still experience Error 0x800F0922 please contact Microsoft Support so that we can further investigate your issue.

Fantastic!  After struggling with this update and trying everything suggested since this beast showed its ugly face, enabling App Readiness service worked for me.  Thank you so much.

Funny thing, though; with App Readiness enabled it takes my PC over 3 and half minutes to be ready for use after leaving the “Welcome Screen”.  From what I can tell, App Readiness was introduced in the transition from Windows 8 to 8.1 and has been problematic for me since its inception!  It has gone back to being “disabled”!

Easy...search for 'services.msc'. Will be near the top of the list.

How and where do I find "App Readiness"?

Nevermind, I figured it out. I still can't get the updates to install.

In the end I gave up and reinstalled Windows on my laptop. This solved the issue and was probably faster than having Microsoft connect to solve the issue. of course the other plus of a full reinstall is that the machine runs quicker than before.

Therefore Windows 8.1 Update 1 is now installed and all other Windows updates seem to be working fine.

After 40 odd hours of investigating, found the problem to be the 'App Readiness' service was disabled. Changed back to Manual, re-downloaded the update and finally it worked!
