Hi,

First, try updating the device’s driver:

1.      Check Windows Update for driver updates.

a.      Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms, and select Settings.

b.      Tap or click Change PC Settings.

c.      Select Update and recovery, then select Windows Update.

d.      Select Check for updates. Make sure to look at the Optional updates in the results.

2.      Check the device manufacturer’s site for updated drivers.

3.      Check the radio manufacturer’s site for updates. To determine what make and model of Bluetooth radio you have:

a.      Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms and select Search, and search for device manager. Open Device Manager from the search results.

b.      In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and look for a device with a name starting with Broadcom, Intel, or Qualcomm Atheros (these are the major radio manufacturers). Check the website of your radio manufacturer for driver updates.

c.      If you don’t see one of these manufacturers, but instead see Generic Bluetooth Adapter:

 i.     Press-and-hold or right-click on Generic Bluetooth Adapter, and select Properties

ii.     Select the Advanced tab.

iii.     Note the number next to Manufacturer ID.

iv.     Find that manufacturer ID on this page: https://www.bluetooth.org/en-us/specification/assigned-numbers/company-identifiers  (Common ones will be 2 = Intel, 15 = Broadcom, 69 = Atheros)

4.      Once you have updated your Bluetooth drivers, please try using your device again. In many cases, updating to the latest drivers will resolve the issue. In some instances, you may need to un-pair and re-pair the device from the Bluetooth settings (from the Settings charm, select Change PC Settings, and then select Bluetooth) to completely fix the issue.

If, after updating to the latest available driver and re-pairing the device, your Bluetooth device is still not working, please provide the following information in your post:

·              PC manufacturer and model

·              Bluetooth radio manufacturer and model

·              Remote device manufacturer and model

This information will help Microsoft to further understand your issue and determine if it is a known issue or a new problem that needs additional investigation.

I have the same Dell Inspiron laptop, bluetooth worked fine on Windows 8, stopped after the 8.1 upgrade. What fixed mine was a driver for a different Dell, I researched so may posts I lost track of where I found it, didn't think it would work since it was for a different model but tried it anyway since nothing else did.

From my notes it was found in:

    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverid=YX1X0 -

    5435_Network_Driver_YX1X0_WN_10.0.0.263_A00.EXE

It's still not perfect like it was in 8.0, sometimes I must turn bluetooth off/on to get it to work. In my case it's for a Rocketfish Bluetooth audio receiver. For a while I said screw it and routed audio from the laptop to my stereo system via the headphone jack.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my Bluetooth device doesn't work. How can I get it working again?

I have this problem on both my Dell Inspiron 15R and my Lenovo W540. My Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 and Logitech diNovo Edge both just stopped working one day. I was able to get them to work again on both PCs, but now they seem to have stopped working permanently.

The Dell came as Win 8, and then upgraded to Win 8.1. The Lenovo came from the factory as 8.1. The devices were both working perfectly fine until they just stopped one day after a reboot.

If I turn Bluetooth off and then turning it back on I see a quick flash that says Driver error on the Bluetooth screen for each device. Then the indication goes back to Paired, but neither device works.

I have made sure that the drivers for both devices and for the  Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) 4.0 + HS Adapter are the latest.

I've spent way too much time on support lines. Dell told me to turn back my machine to Windows 8. I'm not going to do so. Who knows what else will go wrong if I do.

Google it and you find that lots of people have this problem on lots of different devices.

This is really very frustrating and it's about time Microsoft take this issue seriously.

Can anyone help? I need these wireless devices to do my job.

    Hello DVan,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community forum.

Is Bluetooth Device showing under Device Manager list?

If above steps didn't help try the steps provided below and see if it helps.

Try to re-enable your Bluetooth device

It is also possible that the Airplane mode is On of your computer.

Airplane mode is a setting that gives you a quick way to turn off all wireless communication on your PC. As the name implies, it's especially useful when you're on an airplane. Wireless communication includes Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth, GPS or GNSS, near field communication (NFC), and all other types of wireless communication.

    Let’s check the settings.

    1. Open PC Settings
    2. Select Network, and then Airplane mode.

If your Bluetooth device was previously paired, there should be an Enable Bluetooth switch.  Switch it to On.
