After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my Bluetooth device doesn’t work. How can I get it working again?

Hi,

First, try updating the device’s driver:

1. Check Windows Update for driver updates.

a. Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms, and select Settings.

b. Tap or click Change PC Settings.

c. Select Update and recovery, then select Windows Update.

d. Select Check for updates. Make sure to look at the Optional updates in the results.

2. Check the device manufacturer’s site for updated drivers.

3. Check the radio manufacturer’s site for updates. To determine what make and model of Bluetooth radio you have:

a. Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms and select Search, and search for device manager. Open Device Manager from the search results.

b. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and look for a device with a name starting with Broadcom, Intel, or Qualcomm Atheros (these are the major radio manufacturers). Check the website of your radio manufacturer for driver updates.

c. If you don’t see one of these manufacturers, but instead see Generic Bluetooth Adapter:

i. Press-and-hold or right-click on Generic Bluetooth Adapter, and select Properties

ii. Select the Advanced tab.

iii. Note the number next to Manufacturer ID.

iv. Find that manufacturer ID on this page: https://www.bluetooth.org/en-us/specification/assigned-numbers/company-identifiers (Common ones will be 2 = Intel, 15 = Broadcom, 69 = Atheros)

4. Once you have updated your Bluetooth drivers, please try using your device again. In many cases, updating to the latest drivers will resolve the issue. In some instances, you may need to un-pair and re-pair the device from the Bluetooth settings (from the Settings charm, select Change PC Settings, and then select Bluetooth) to completely fix the issue.

If, after updating to the latest available driver and re-pairing the device, your Bluetooth device is still not working, please provide the following information in your post:

· PC manufacturer and model

· Bluetooth radio manufacturer and model

· Remote device manufacturer and model

This information will help Microsoft to further understand your issue and determine if it is a known issue or a new problem that needs additional investigation.

Regarding the AR3012 chipset specifically:

I've been in contact with support from BigfootNetworks/KillerGaming regarding this issue. They have acknowledged that the power management features have been removed (possibly erroneously?) and plan to address it, but they also offered much more interesting input regarding the BT stack:

as you may have seen in the forum post, it appears to affect Intel BT cards also, which signifies to me that this is likely an issue with the Windows 8.1 Bluetooth stack. With the older Bluetooth (Windows 8), we wrote our own Bluetooth stack. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has required that we use their stack

So, it's sounding like there won't be any real relief for this problem until Microsoft steps up and fixes their BT stack, which I don't think has seen many updates in the last few years!

Same issue I need my phone to access the net (GT-I9300) and both the USB tethering and and Bluetooth tethering stopped working after the 8.1 update.

All my drivers are up to date : Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software for Windows 8.1 v 16.7.0 AND Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth® technology for Windows 8.1 v 3.1.1311 for my Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230.

I'm on a MSI GT60 0nd 99fr laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro x64.

hi,

I got the same problem, I ve got SAMSUNG

NP310E5C-U01PL , windows 8.1

My bluetooth radio is QUALLCOMM ATHEROS AR 3012. My device is Philips AEA 2000/12 . I cannot add it in pc devices.It's not even being found. I ve updated BT driver to the latest 8.0.1.302 , i see there's newr one 8.0.1.306 but i cannot install it, while trying to install i get the error "system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" . No idea how to fix it :(

I have the same issue with a brandnew sony vaio multiflip 13 inch hybrid portable tablet.

Am installing the machine, after upgrading a full updated windows 8 with all hardware installed OK, meaning wifi, Bluetooth sony mouse, etc I immediately updated to windows 8.1 after update I udtaed all the drivers from all manufacturers.

In this case Bluetooth and wifi are intel. The wifi drivers needed an update after that after returning from sleepmode the wifi had limited connectivity just stopping an restarting helped.

After doing a restart wifi OK, Bluetooth mouse no longer connects, nothing seems wrong no error whatsoever in device manager - mouse installed it simply says not connected, so I can no longer use the bleutooth mouse.

There is clearly an issue with Bluetooth and wifi with windows 8.1 if you see all the posts.

AND PLEASE do not give me the standard answers I read and tried them they give me no solution:

1 All drivers are latest versions

2 no error report

3 cannot remove the device from the device lsit (meaning the mouse)

It seems it has something todo and is related with wifi
