"add a wireless display" missing windows 8.1

I am trying to connect a wireless display (Samsung 2013 tv) with my Asus Windows 8.1 laptop. When I go to the charms menu and select 'devices', the option to 'Add a wireless display' is missing.

From what I remember, the option was there before I installed the windows 8.1 update, but I didn't have a need to connect it wirelessly to my TV at that time.

I ran the Intel WiDi program. This found the Samsung TV. I entered the pairing code and the TV displayed a message to say that it was connected to my laptop. However, that it where it ended. It just stays on that same screen and doesn't display what's on my laptop screen.

Am I missing something really obvious here? I feel like I'm going around in circles!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Generally, if your PC came with Windows 8.1 and your wireless display supports Miracast, you’re ready to add the wireless display to your PC to complete the connection, and start projecting.

However, if you upgraded your PC from an older version of Windows, you'll need to make sure your PC supports Miracast and is ready to project. Also, if the display you'll project to doesn’t support Miracast, you’ll need to set up the display by adding an extra piece of hardware to it before you can start projecting.

I would have you add the display to complete the connection.

Follow these steps to add a wireless display to your PC:

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Devices.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Devices.) 2. Tap or click Project, and then tap or click Add a wireless display. 3. Choose the wireless display in the list of devices found, and follow the instructions on the screen.

There are few suggestions to fix the issue. I would have you refer to the section “Fix problems” from the following link and see if it fixes the issue.

If there are no Windows 8.1 drivers, you may refer to the link and install the drivers in compatibility mode.

I have bran new HP 2000 laptop out of box. Got it just for Window 8.1 miracast ability

using Motorola sbg6580 modem\router.

Trying to screen mirror to TV through Roku

Same problem as everyone else. "add wireless device" option is missing.

Call Microsoft support. For $100 the said they could fix it???? They told me it was driver issues. Made me mad. Not payng for a new product then have to pay again as soon as you get home. Hung up on them.

Any suggestions on how to get "add wireless device"

I recommend running two apps. One is the DxDiag, outlined in another answer here, and trying to install the Intel WiDi Driver update.

"Check by running "dxdiag", click "Save All Information", open the text file and look for "Miracast"." by GGIM.

For my Sony VAIO, DxDiag told me my wireless card did not support Miracast. Also check out this link: https://communities.intel.com/message/220018 Running the Intel WiDi update failed because my Network Card does not support WiDi. So for anyone with a Sony VAIO you won't be running WiDi.

When you buy your system, make sure it supports WiDi before purchasing. I know, you get here too late after it doesn't work and you start hunting for solutions, so you might want to pass this little nugget on to your friends.

UPDATE: DxDiag showed a Broadwell as Miracast: Not Supported. However reading about the Broadwell (i5-5300U) Intel said it WAS supported. This is when I started hunting for new drivers. Once I installed new Video and Network drivers DxDiag changed to Supported, and "Add a Wireless Display" showed up under Project.

Same problem as everyone else. "add wireless device" option is missing.

No one in this thread has mentioned if they are using multiple wired monitors as well as trying to add a wireless one but I think the UI is different in that case. E.g. I would not see it by using Win-P but I would be able to see it by getting into Project via Win-K. Then it would be available via another link at the bottom of the slightly different Project dialog. YMMV.
