Windows 8.1 does not appear in Windows 8 Professional [NOT 8.1 Preview] Store

Windows 8 Professional (NOT PREVIEW) does not show the Windows 8.1 Update on the Store.  Instead the Store, as usual, begins with Spotlight and not Windows.

These additional (perhaps related) issues are present:

• Unable to install KB2871389
• Facebook App in the store cannot be installed as the system does not meet minimum requirements

The following have been tried:

• Updating from Preview - BECAUSE WE ARE NOT RUNNING PREVIEW
• Numerous direct links to the entry on the store (paste ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade into IE, Chrome, FFx)
• SFC /SCANNOW
• WSRESET
• Checked not running Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 8 Pro via KMS activation, and Windows 8 via MSDN ISO's.
• Waited for a period of time with the PC turned on
• Sitting for an hour with MS Support (thanks Jer419!)
• Clean install of latest nVidia display drivers using GeForce Experience
• Windows Update Troubleshooter
• Uninstall, reboot, and re-install of nVidia Drivers

- Clean boot and installation of US Language Pack (couldn't do it)

• System refresh followed by Windows Update Repairs

- Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant

• Installation of KB2871389 which is an update to Windows 8 to make the store ready for 8.1 downloads(previously "The update is not applicable to your computer") - now just fails after the system restarts.

Fixes achieved:

• System refresh fixed:

--- Being unable to install the US Language Pack (KB2607607)

--- Windows Update issue where there was a repeating install of one update and no updates listed as having been installed ever (it's still not 100%, however, with updates failing on reboot)

--- Program and Features > "Turn Windows Features on and off" previously showed an empty white box with NO "Please Wait..."

Working on:

• Installing every available update one-by-one
• Another system refresh

Go to Command Prompt (Admin) then type

slmgr.vbs -dli

If you see

Description: Windows(R) Operating System, RETAIL Channel

You will be eligible to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

Unfortunately, Volume MAK Channel and Enterprise Edition are not eligible to update to Windows 8.1 which is not good.

One point  to call out.   Volume license copies just can't be updated through the Store.  They can be updated through the supported method for a Volume licence copy.

Hey Andrew_P : as in other posts and intimated in the header, this thread is about the boxed (retail) version of Windows 8 - not the MAK, MSDN, Volume etc versions.  Perhaps you could post this to the related threads on the matter?

Just to confirm, when I run that command, after a Refresh of the PC, I get:

Error: 0x80070426 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0x80070426' to display the error text.

Which turns out to be "The service has not been started".

Just to be sure all activation was ok, I did:

slui 3

Re-entered my activation key, which yes, did "take a few minutes..." and then I got "Access Denied; A process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights." 0xC0000022.

A new problem, apparently more serious.

When re-activating Windows 8 (see above), this being after a Refresh, I get this error:

Access Denied; A process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights." 0xC0000022

I checked in Services.msc to see if there are any other services (remembering, this is after a Refresh!) that are set to start Automatically but have not Started after a reboot:

NVidia Display Driver Service (so what)

Software Protection

...and that's all.

So there's something odd up with that Software Protection Component, and, as is noted in other places, I wonder if that's why the updates are not installing - because Windows 8 does not think that it's a genuine copy?

I note in this post [http://www.windows7newsinfo.com/smf/index.php?topic=5862.0;wap2] that this can result if a Group Policy is applied to the object.  This is something that I know happened on this machine, as it ONCE had my business username on it, and I had to change security settings and all that jazz.  However, as to whether this part of functionality / the registry was affected, I don't know...

Question is, how do I fix that?  Is there a way to install just that service (above and beyond a Refresh)?
