Windows 8.1 x64 - Low memory while playing full screen games

Info: This bug was fixed on August 12th 2014 with the release of the month's Patch Tuesday. Make sure to install every update available for your system, if you're having the problem described on this thread.

Hello, I've been facing a "tough" problem with my computer running Windows 8.1 x64. I did not upgrade from Windows 8, I did a clean install and for the past month, everytime I play some of the new 2013 games (Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Battlefield 4, CoD:Ghosts etc.), I'm constantly getting a "low memory" warning from time to time.

So, giving that my laptop is capable of running these games (Asus N56VZ - Intel Core i7, Intel HD 4000 + Nvidia GT650 M, 6GB DDR3, 750GB 7200rpm, Full-HD 15,6" screen), I began searching for an answer. Here's what I've concluded:

When the game (eg: Battlefield 4) opens, the memory consumption begins to rise, and rise, and rise, non stop, until the system doesn't have more memory available and triggers the low memory warning. However, in the exact moment that I "alt+tab" out of game OR the memory warning does it for me, all of the occupied memory is emptied instantly, like magic!

I was able to "understand" this using Process Explorer by MS (sysinternals), heres a screenshot that shows the "climbing" and the sudden drops:

http://prntscr.com/2809xc

I cant really discover where all this memory is being allocated/used, and I have no idea on whats causing this. I also don't know if this is Windows-related, device-related or driver-related.

Is anyone facing this as well?

[UPDATE DECEMBER 9th] This issue is triggered when the resolution in which the games are being played differs from the resolution configured on Windows.

If you are playing a game, say, in 1366x768, you need to change the system resolution to the same 1366x768 BEFORE opening the game. That will stop the excessive memory consumption and you'll be able to play the game fine.

My system is in Portuguese, but I think it's easy to get it:

This also concludes that the issue is Windows-related and not driver related, so we'll have to wait for Microsoft to patch it. Meanwhile, remember to change your resolution when you're going to play.

[UPDATE APRIL 26th 2014]

According to some Intel folks at communities.intel.com (http://is.gd/71Vha2), Microsoft has confirmed the issue with Windows 8.1 in an internal email. It resides - as it was explained - on the DWM (Desktop Window Manager) which triggers a memory leak when running fullscreen games with a resolution different than the desktop resolution.

The memory leak fills the system memory and page file with junk until there's no more memory available.

We assume Microsoft is already working on a fix for this, altough we never heard anything "official" from them regarding the issue.

[UPDATE AUGUST 14th 2014]

The problem has been finally fixed by Microsoft with the release of the August updates on Aug. 12th.

Make sure to install every single update available - including the optional ones - and you'll no longer receive low-memory warnings when running fullscreen games/apps with different resolution/refresh rate.

Also make sure you're using the latest drivers available for your Intel and/or Nvidia GPU (it might be important).

I might be a bit cynical but I looked through all the support KB's from the updates today and couldn't find anything that related to fixing this issue (unless I'm missing something)...

Yesterday i have made the update and i found via the link also no description, but...

Yah!, after nearly 10 months, microsoft have now solved this bug.

With the latest patches (Patch Day 12.08.2014, also install the optional Updates),

all different resolutions and framerates works well.

    Did you try my solution?

"Try to set TV screen as a main screen and set Dispaly option (M$ key + P) to Extended."

For my configuration this works for me.

    My specification:

    TOSHIBA QOSMIO X70

    Win 8.1 Pro

    RAM: 16GB

    Intel 4600 + GTX 770

connected with tv by HDMI port

    Drivers: GeForce 335.23

    Intel 10.18.10 3345

I do not have momory leak only if set TV screen as a main screen and set Dispaly option (M$ key + P) to Extended.

After unpluged TV or switch to only laptop screen my memory will be filled (18GB)  in time < 20min during playing games in full mode.

Hi all here, I give it up, Im not able to try out more possible solutions! I spent my last 2 weeks to find any solution for this issue! I have the same problem as all of you here, I get this "close programs to prevent information loss due to low on memory" thing when I play nearly any kind of game on my system when its quite not reasonable. Ive read a lot of forums and threads about that problem, tried out everything, but didnt work, and reading a lot about it, now I can make a summary in my mind, a kind of conclusion that why Im not able to solve this by myself, so imagine this: I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y510p w/Core i7-4700MQ, 1Tb HDD, 12Gb RAM (8+4Gb Samsung 1600Mhz DDR3L), GeForce GT 755m 2Gb GDDR5 and an integrated Intel HD 4600M, original Win 8.1 with updates (Win 8.1 is registered at Microsoft and Lenovo Ideapad is registered at Lenovo). I linked my notebook with my Samsung LED TV, and firstly I tried out Tomb Raider (around high settings, I know that this machine is able to run it on max, but just to make it quite sure to run properly, I adjusted resolution to 1280×720 60Hz and some graphical settings lower, so its around high settings). It runs perfectly with this settings, but after half an hour I got that message which Ive mentioned in the beginning and after that I get this message 2-3× in an hour and next time it exits automatically without any prompt. Its not reasonable! Ive got more than enough RAM to run this game, its not the lack of memory (it is proven by that when I play with it, runs perfectly and when I get this message and I return to game it continues on the same way without any issue or performance loss, runs just like before). AND IT HAPPENS ALL THE GAMES WHICH IVE TRIED WITH! I tried Assassins creed 4 black flag does the same, **** 2 enhanced edition does the same, Mortal Kombat 9 komplete edition does the same, Alan Wake`s American Nightmare does the same, THIS THING HAPPENS TO ALL THE GAMES!

Ive started to search for that issue on internet and Ive read a lot of forums dealing with this problem and Ive found various different suggestions to solve this issue. There are a lot of opinions about what is this problem but all of them agree on that its not the lack of physical memory (of course). Ive started to try out the tricks and the followings happened: Ive read a suggestion to reinstall a new Intel HD driver, completely uninstall GeForce driver and perform a "clean install" with the latest GeForce driver, and on nVidia control panel set my GeForce card as a videocard to run these games. Everything remained the same, after around half an hour, the message appeared in the same way....after that, Ive read about that if I set my windows desktop resolution to the same that the current game, it solves this issue. In case of Tomb Raider (just to remain at the same example) first I set my screen to LED TV then I set the windows desktop screen resolution to 1280×720 60Hz and the same in game. And everything remained the same!!! I still got that message!!! (even I tried to set the notebook resolution first to 1280×720 60Hz then switch to the TV screen and after that run the game, but didnt help either). So its absolutely not true if you set your windows desktop resolution to the same as in game then this problem vanishes, because it doesnt. I think probably because when you are in windows, system uses Intel HD 4600 but when you run a game, the dedicated GeForce card will run the game so its a kind of "switching" to the other card. So although its not a resolution change, because the desktop and the game are on same resolution and refresh rate, but there is that "switching", and it could be a similar process for the system...At this point, Ive started to get angry. On another forum, Ive read about setting the paging memory. Ive tried out every form of paging memory (disabling it, switch to system controlled, or writing definite values also), but neither of them solved this problem. Same old story! As a surplus addition, Ive tried out to run games in windows 7 compatibility mode, but didnt make any sense. On the same forum, Ive read about disabling this message, but I think because it is a substantive problem, although it can solve the low memory messages by turning it off, but finally the game will exit on the same way like when this message is turned on, so I dont want to turn it off, I think it wouldnt solve the root of the problem...On this forum Ive read that it is possibly an Intel HD driver problem, and in case of Win 8.1 this problem appears around driver ver. 3000 and above. Some of you mentioned ver. 2884 didnt have this issue, and Ive tried to install that instead of the latest driver, but....yes, can not do that, because its not compatible with HD 4600, just with 4000, so can not change it. Ok, I got back to the same ver. as before, and I started to think what to do next. I thought "what if I just disable Intel HD card in BIOS? Besides, I dont need that, theres the GeForce card" so, no! If I disable it, poor and sad GeForce card will cry for Intel HD because of optimus technology (I think) because as windows boots, Im able to scroll the mouse but nothing opens and none of the applications run, just windows desktop stands in front of you as a dumb boy! So I had to enable this card again and get back to the same point as at the beginning of this whole story. Ive read at another forum it can be that your HDD is nearly full, but it can not be because this system is new with a fresh windows on it and from 1Tb I have 790Gb free disk space. But also mentioned there to clean the system and cache with CCleaner, so I made a full clean with CCleaner, and as an additional surplus, I ran my anti-virus software just to make sure (although I knew there was no point in it). AND NOTHING IS CHANGED, NOTHING AFFECTS THIS ****!....But, just to proove to myself, I checked what is happening during a message like that, what if I REALLY run out of memory? (our example, Tomb Raider needs 4Gb RAM, I have 12Gb, dont forget), so next time when the message appeared I immediately checked Task Managers memory performance, and I WAS NOT ABLE TO BELIEVE WHAT I SAW THERE! When this issue occured again, Tomb Raider used around 600Mb of RAM, and with ALL APPLICATIONS INCLUDED, the system used LESS THAN 30% OF MY TOTAL PHYSICAL MEMORY!!!! BRAVO!.....

So I make my conclusion, which is the following: if you have a system which has an integrated Intel HD VGA, a dedicated GeForce GT VGA w/optimus technology, Win 8.1 OS on the system, and an external display, then YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE YET! But I dont understand something: if its an Intel HD driver related problem, why does it occur when I play games? If the system switches to the dedicated GeForce card then how can Intel HD driver be in use, how can this cause the problem? I dont understand it fully!

I get tired, really! I spent hours read about this and solve this but nothing affects this s****! Do we have to face with this kind of problem in 2014? On this forum the first entry about this issue was written on 1st dec. 2013 by Emannxx, and now the date is 27th mar. 2014 (on other forums the first entries were created around the same time). I know, because Ive read through nearly all of them, but I can assure anyone it is not solved officially by any of the possible responsible parties (Microsoft or Intel, probably nVidia). Werent they able to fix this issue in nearly 4 months???????? Are they normal??? Do they read forums about issues??? Do they really think that people will agree to play games cancelling this s***** message in every half an hour, and then accept it that after 1 and a half hour the game will exit automatically because of the great nothing???? I bought this notebook not to like stupid facebook entries but to play games linked with my TV on any resolution I ever choose!!! Is that such a big request???? In 2014? Yes, probably a system format and choosing Windows 7 would solve that, but I dont want to start it from the beginning, it takes nearly 2 days to install everything properly, especially in case of this Lenovo because they gave a lot of softwares to this machine. Besides, in case of new drivers, very clever Microsoft forces Win 8.1 instead of Win 7. I can not understand Microsoft, from bigger Windows they let the fewest time for Win 7, which is their best OS, and now instead of it they pushes this s\*\*\*\*\* Win 8.1. Microsoft, instead of having negotiations with companies to support only Win 8, solve issues like that because no one will be interested in your inferior OS if it has great issues like that!!!! Moreover, Did I really buy this system to accept this problem and sit on my a\*\* without raising my voice???? I dont bother if Microsoft, Intel, or nVidia do it, but solve this problem promptly, SOLVE IT, COME ON, SOLVE IT YOU NOVICES, THIS IS THE 4TH MONTHS AND PEOPLE JUST GUESSING BY THEIRSELVES TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE! COME ON, DO IT!!!! If anyone else has another solution which I havent tried, please share with me, but dont write these things: 1. "Ooh, you have a lack of physical memory." No, I dont, if someone states that, than he/shes a novice, this amount of RAM is enough for everything nowadays. 2. "Just install Win 7 instead of Win 8.1." As Ive mentioned, I dont want to deal with that, Im tired, besides I think in 2014 a newer system should be better than the older one, and the solution shouldnt be that to roll back to an earlier windows. 3. "Change your resolution to native resolution, and just use applications only on your native 1080p resolution." No! I want to use the applications on any kind of resolution, vary them if I want, I think it`s not a big request in 2014. 4. "Go to the service with your system because your RAM went wrong." Nothing went wrong, I ran deep memtests before I started to use the machine, it works perfectly!

So, thank you for your attention, if anyone has any suggestion, please do not hesitate to share it!
