Windows 8 and 8.1 Randomly Freezing My Entire Laptop

Hello All,

I recently bought a brand new laptop from Amazon, a very sexy Acer Aspire that I absolutely love! The only problem with this gorgeous piece of work is that I can't use it that much!

It came with Windows 8 and worked fine for the first week, but then it started to randomly freeze. At the time, I thought it was WoW causing the freezing on the machine since that is all I was using it for at first. Several weeks later, when I started to play WoW less and do more on the computer, the freezing would still occur at the most random of times, no matter what I was or was not doing!

Let me be clear. When I say that this computer freezes, I mean that the cursor is frozen, it registers NO input of any kind, even if I faceroll the keyboard and run all of my fingers across its beautiful touch screen. What's equally annoying is that there is NO warning that it's about to happen. When the freeze occurs, I cannot do ANYTHING on the computer.

Once it freezes, the ONLY thing that I can do to fix it is to perform a hard restart, which I HATE to do.

I thought that the problem might be fixed once I upgraded it to 8.1, so I was very excited to install it, but that has not been the case. The problem has been consistent in its occurrence and annoyance.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine what the issue might be, but if anyone may be able to provide a permanent solution to this problem, I would be eternally grateful to them.

    Hi guys,

    unfortunetly my problem is not solved yet, even it's similar to Yours.

    My laptop is:

    Acer Aspire 5755g

    *i5,8GB of RAM, HDD, gt540m

    After upgrading OS from 7 to 8 i've experianced random freezing phenomena. I've found out that the situation happens mostly during audio playback. Not important if it's music or movie.

    The freez we talk about is total freeze, can't move mouse, num lock/caps lock doesn't work, audio playback is in short loop like "buzzzzzzzzzzz" (don't know how to explain the sound more accure to You ;))

    What i've tried:

    • upgrading to 8.1
    • updating every single driver to the newest available
    • updating bios -- > right now 1.21 and there is no newer one

    Unfortunetlu i had to get back to Windows 7!! I was not able to do my work on 8. All in all i've learned to save my progress more often ;)

    Jan,

    I honestly would not know what to suggest to you. I mean, the BIOS update that worked for me was released early January of this year, so, you may have to wait until a newer one is released for the problem to be fixed, (although I see that you reverted to Windows 7 again, which, I don't blame you!)

    YES, save VERY often! Sometimes my computer would freeze once a day or so, or sometimes it would freeze 5 times in 5 minutes. It's a wonder I never tried to make it fly like the fabled pigs society alludes to!

    I have found a solution that seems to work for me - I have an Acer Aspire v5 series 552P-7480.

    I went and disabled the WIRED LAN adapter from inside the device manager, and so far no more freezing up - it's been 2 weeks constantly running
