Windows 8 and 8.1 Randomly Freezing My Entire Laptop

Hello All,

I recently bought a brand new laptop from Amazon, a very sexy Acer Aspire that I absolutely love! The only problem with this gorgeous piece of work is that I can't use it that much!

It came with Windows 8 and worked fine for the first week, but then it started to randomly freeze. At the time, I thought it was WoW causing the freezing on the machine since that is all I was using it for at first. Several weeks later, when I started to play WoW less and do more on the computer, the freezing would still occur at the most random of times, no matter what I was or was not doing!

Let me be clear. When I say that this computer freezes, I mean that the cursor is frozen, it registers NO input of any kind, even if I faceroll the keyboard and run all of my fingers across its beautiful touch screen. What's equally annoying is that there is NO warning that it's about to happen. When the freeze occurs, I cannot do ANYTHING on the computer.

Once it freezes, the ONLY thing that I can do to fix it is to perform a hard restart, which I HATE to do.

I thought that the problem might be fixed once I upgraded it to 8.1, so I was very excited to install it, but that has not been the case. The problem has been consistent in its occurrence and annoyance.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine what the issue might be, but if anyone may be able to provide a permanent solution to this problem, I would be eternally grateful to them.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you very soon.

    Hi,

This could occur  due to other application that might be running at the background on the laptop. Outdated display driver might also cause such issues.

What is the Model of the Acer aspire laptop?

Follow the steps and check if it resolves the issue.

    Step 1:

Refer to the link to boot the computer in safe mode:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/dual-booting-boot-manager-boot-options

Check if the issue still occurs. If not, proceed to the next step.

    Step 2:

Place the computer in a clean boot state and find out the cause of the issue.

You can refer to the link to place the computer in a clean boot state:

“How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8”

Refer to the section “Windows 8

You can refer the section “How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot” to check for the application or program that is causing this issue:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Please refer section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

To further troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest you to refer to the manufacturer website of the laptop to download and install the latest display driver.

Please let us know if the issue still persists.

Similar issue to mine? However mine never froze at 8 - only started doing it after 8.1 or thereabouts. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-performance/system-freezes-frequently-but-pointer-moves/b1f40174-b22e-4eaa-9c31-b1539b6c4841

I really think it might be due to the automatic maintenance.

I am first face this problem after clean installation from win 8. It is really due to automatic maintenance. I have not figured out how to disable this service. If it is running awhile (whether automatic or manual), my computer begins to freezes. There is no way I can stop this service since it does not react to any command.

I truely hope that MS will take up this issue. I have tried to follow all instructions given in this community or on internet. I have not been successful yet.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire V5-552P-X440.

I have not been able to replicate the issue in safe mode yet, but I have only conducted limited testing of the laptop in safe mode since it is quite boring to do so! Unfortunately, I will need to boot it to safe mode more.

I have not been able to try everything that you have recommended yet...I tried disabling all non-Microsoft services, but my entire computer still freezes.

Also, just to make sure you are clear, when I say my computer freezes, I mean that the ENTIRE computer is unresponsive. I can't move my mouse or do anything. It is as if someone has placed a static image on my monitor. The only resolution is to perform a hard restart.

I will try the advice in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135    and see if by disabling some startup services that the problem will be fixed.

I will also be checking the manufacturer website for the latest display driver.

Thank you for your time! I just wanted to update you on what has been happening as of late.

It's almost similar, except for the fact that my entire computer freezes. I can't move my mouse or do ANYHING on it EXCEPT to force it to shut down and then turn it back on.
