Windows 8 and 8.1 Randomly Freezing My Entire Laptop

Hello All,

I recently bought a brand new laptop from Amazon, a very sexy Acer Aspire that I absolutely love! The only problem with this gorgeous piece of work is that I can't use it that much!

It came with Windows 8 and worked fine for the first week, but then it started to randomly freeze. At the time, I thought it was WoW causing the freezing on the machine since that is all I was using it for at first. Several weeks later, when I started to play WoW less and do more on the computer, the freezing would still occur at the most random of times, no matter what I was or was not doing!

Let me be clear. When I say that this computer freezes, I mean that the cursor is frozen, it registers NO input of any kind, even if I faceroll the keyboard and run all of my fingers across its beautiful touch screen. What's equally annoying is that there is NO warning that it's about to happen. When the freeze occurs, I cannot do ANYTHING on the computer.

Once it freezes, the ONLY thing that I can do to fix it is to perform a hard restart, which I HATE to do.

I thought that the problem might be fixed once I upgraded it to 8.1, so I was very excited to install it, but that has not been the case. The problem has been consistent in its occurrence and annoyance.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine what the issue might be, but if anyone may be able to provide a permanent solution to this problem, I would be eternally grateful to them.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you very soon.

    Hi,

Well, looks like, you may have enabled Wakeup timers as well as the service which is not getting disabled. I would suggest you to check if there are wakeup timer enabled under Power options. If they are, disable the setting and check if it works. Follow the steps:

    a)      Press Windows and X key together and Click on Power option.

    b)      Click on Change Plan settings besides power plan option.

    c)       Click on Change advance power settings.

    d)      Expand Sleep and select Disabled under Allow Wakeup timers.

    e)      Click on Apply. Click on OK.

Check if that fixes the issue after disabling Maintenance Configurator.

Please get back to us with the results.

Mine does the same thing. The first thing to go is the internet connection then it freezes, blue screens and restarts on its own. I too have not been able to figure out what is causing the problem. I have windows 8.1 with all Microsoft updates.

    Mr. Pinaki,

I successfully updated the driver for my laptop, but not even 10 minutes later, it froze once more.

    I then proceeded to disable the task scheduler;

My laptop lists 4 processes under that event: "Idle Maintenance" "Maintenance Configurator" "Manual Maintenance" and "Regular Maintenance".

I am able to disable all of the BUT the "Maintenance Configurator". With all of the others disabled, the laptop still freezes, and even when I close out of the Task Scheduler program, they all revert back to being 'enabled'.

The "Maintenance Configurator" says that the account I am using does not have the proper permissions to disable it, so, I'm thinking that THAT might be what is causing my laptop to freeze, since I can disable everything else.

How can I disable it, and how I can I make sure that my changes are saved?

    Hi,

Did you try updating the driver for the display adapter?

It looks like Acer have released driver for the display adapter. Refer to the link to download and install the driver:

    Make sure that you uninstall the current version from Device Manager and then install the latest version of display driver;

    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

Again, depending on certain responses on this post, it looks like Automatic Maintenance service could also be a cause. Apart from updating the driver, disable the service and check if the issue is fixed. Follow the steps:

Note: It is recommended to leave Automatic Maintenance enabled to let it run automatically at a time you set when the PC is running and you're not using it.  If you disable Automatic Maintenance, then it would be recommended to manually start Automatic Maintenance at least once a week or as needed.

    a) Press the + R keys to open the Run dialog, type taskschd.msc, and click/tap on OK.

    b) In the left pane of Task Scheduler, click/tap on to expand Task Scheduler Library, Microsoft, Windows, and TaskScheduler.

    c) In the middle pane of TaskScheduler, either right click on or select the Regular Maintenance task.

    d) To Disable Automatic Maintenance, click/tap on Disable.

    e) When finished, you can close Task Scheduler if you like.

Please let us know about the results.

    Mr. Panaki,

I have a quick update to make.

My laptop just froze, as usual, which didn't surprise me and only served to annoy me, but this time, instead of restarting it manually, I just let it sit with the image frozen on the screen and the fan running somewhat loudly. I left the room and came back about 30 minutes later and saw that my laptop had completely restarted by itself and was waiting for me to log in as if nothing had happened.

I'm not sure what this is indicative of, but  I figured it might be valuable information.
