Windows 8 and 8.1 Randomly Freezing My Entire Laptop

Hello All,

I recently bought a brand new laptop from Amazon, a very sexy Acer Aspire that I absolutely love! The only problem with this gorgeous piece of work is that I can't use it that much!

It came with Windows 8 and worked fine for the first week, but then it started to randomly freeze. At the time, I thought it was WoW causing the freezing on the machine since that is all I was using it for at first. Several weeks later, when I started to play WoW less and do more on the computer, the freezing would still occur at the most random of times, no matter what I was or was not doing!

Let me be clear. When I say that this computer freezes, I mean that the cursor is frozen, it registers NO input of any kind, even if I faceroll the keyboard and run all of my fingers across its beautiful touch screen. What's equally annoying is that there is NO warning that it's about to happen. When the freeze occurs, I cannot do ANYTHING on the computer.

Once it freezes, the ONLY thing that I can do to fix it is to perform a hard restart, which I HATE to do.

I thought that the problem might be fixed once I upgraded it to 8.1, so I was very excited to install it, but that has not been the case. The problem has been consistent in its occurrence and annoyance.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine what the issue might be, but if anyone may be able to provide a permanent solution to this problem, I would be eternally grateful to them.

I timed mine and it takes.about 20 minutes to restart. Not good when you are in the middle of a report! I tried the Microsoft safety virus scan. It found nothing and it still locks up.

You're right, that's EXACTLY what happens to me. I know if I let it sit after it freezes, then it restarts. I'm not sure how long it waits to do that, but I think it's 5 min or so. It's surprising that it doesn't take long to do it.

I have the exact same issue. Everything just locks up and I can't do anything except turn off the computer and turn it back with the switch.. Sometimes it happens every few minutes at work and it is very frustrating. I did try to leave it in the locked up state (but still on) last night when I went to bed and when I got up this morning it was on the start screen.

Hi,

Let's check for the events under Event Viewer as this might contain all the system errors during such scenarios.

I would suggest you to post the event viewer logs here, so that we can check it and identify the exact issue. Refer to these steps:

1.       Go to the Start Screen, type in Event Viewer. This will bring up the Event Viewer tile, Click to open the event viewer.

2.       In the left pane, expand out Windows Logs. Click on Application log and highlight the first event in the log and use your arrow keys to scroll down.

3.       Most of your event will be Information. You may see Yellow Warnings or Red Errors. If you see any red error, you can double click on it to bring it up and copy the contents to a document.

Also, you can try running the Microsoft Safety scanner to check if there is virus or malware present on the computer.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software. The Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. I just tried your suggestion and found that the timers have already been disabled this entire time, so I hope you have another idea, haha.
