Windows 8 and 8.1 Randomly Freezing My Entire Laptop

Hello All,

I recently bought a brand new laptop from Amazon, a very sexy Acer Aspire that I absolutely love! The only problem with this gorgeous piece of work is that I can't use it that much!

It came with Windows 8 and worked fine for the first week, but then it started to randomly freeze. At the time, I thought it was WoW causing the freezing on the machine since that is all I was using it for at first. Several weeks later, when I started to play WoW less and do more on the computer, the freezing would still occur at the most random of times, no matter what I was or was not doing!

Let me be clear. When I say that this computer freezes, I mean that the cursor is frozen, it registers NO input of any kind, even if I faceroll the keyboard and run all of my fingers across its beautiful touch screen. What's equally annoying is that there is NO warning that it's about to happen. When the freeze occurs, I cannot do ANYTHING on the computer.

Once it freezes, the ONLY thing that I can do to fix it is to perform a hard restart, which I HATE to do.

I thought that the problem might be fixed once I upgraded it to 8.1, so I was very excited to install it, but that has not been the case. The problem has been consistent in its occurrence and annoyance.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine what the issue might be, but if anyone may be able to provide a permanent solution to this problem, I would be eternally grateful to them.

    Hi,

    Well, the reason for a refresh is just to verify the current status of the issue after performing a Refresh on Windows 8 platform. Windows 8.1 requires you to have latest driver updates and other enhanced features, which in turn, if not available, might result in such scenarios. So, it would be better to reinstall/perform a Repair installation of Windows 8, if the issue still persists after performing a Refresh.

    Warning: In-place Upgrade Feature: Before you perform an in-place upgrade, you should be prepared for a worst case scenario that results in your existing data on your computer being deleted. This data includes personal data, settings, hardware driver information, and software programs. If a worst case scenario occurs, you may have to reinstall all programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or to other external storage devices before you perform an in-place upgrade.

    • Start Windows 8, and sign in to an administrator account.
    • Disable any 3rd party firewall, antivirus, or other security program to avoid it from possibly preventing the repair in-place upgrade installation of Windows 8.
    • If you doing it through a Windows 8 DVD, you can insert the DVD and open the DVD ROM drive. Double Click on the setup file and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • While going through the installation, choose Keep settings, personal file and apps and then select Upgrade: Install Windows and keep file, settings and applications.

    Mr. Pinaki,

    I don't have to perform that refresh to tell you this; before I cam to you with my issue, this problem was occurring for me in Windows 8. I then installed 8.1 hoping that it would fix the issue, but it has still persisted, unfortunately. That is when I came to you for help.

    In short, reverting to Windows 8 would not fix the problem at all, since it was already an issue before I installed 8.1

    Do you still believe that I should perform this step, in light of what I have just told you?

    Hi,

    As we have tried all other troubleshooting steps, I would suggest you to refresh Windows 8.1 using Windows 8 media. You will navigate to Windows 8. You can then monitor if the same issue occurs in Windows 8. If it reoccurs, I would suggest you to re-install Windows 8. Refer to the link to perform Refresh Windows 8.1:

    Refer to the section “Refresh your PC without affecting your files”.

    Note: Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.

    I appreciate you helping me so much. This problem is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable, though. I do understand that you are doing your best to help me, so I hope that we can get this problem resolved very soon, because I am unable to do anything on my laptop now!

    This issue is out if hand, and I hate that this is happening, because I love Windows 8.1 since it is an amazing operating system!

    Also, I dont remember if I mentioned this, but when the computer freezes, if I am listening to music, even the music freezes and makes a VERY harsh, grating sound for a few moments before it stops. I hope this information helps you.

    I just tried all 3 of your suggestions, and the laptop froze on me twice within the last 5 minutes as I tried to log on here and reply to your post.
