This error appears to be related to expected files, folders or registry paths that are missing.
One commonly reported folder being missing is the C:\Users\Default folder.
Open the File Explorer, expand C, and expand the Users folder.
If there is no folder named Default, create one.
If C:\Users\Default exists please use the following guidance:
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.
Then run the DISM tool
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)
If you have C:\Users\Default and you have used the Windows Update troubleshooter and completed the DISM commands but still experience Error 0x80070003 please contact Microsoft Support so that we can further investigate your issue.

It could be one of the generic drivers included within Windows 8
Yes. Some drivers included in the WinSxS folder and in the Driver Store.
I think that files are not damaged, but metadata - yes.
When you start DISM it fails.
I agree completely. It is incumbent upon Microsoft to supply media for the customer to avail him or herself with the ability to perform a repair/install. Microsoft refuses to do so which requires users to have to resort to torrent or other sites to find such media. This is not a reasonable or acceptable solution, but because Microsoft continues to refuse to provide such media to its customers, then the issue will continue. Apparently this is of no concern to Microsoft which is why we continue to have post after post and thread after thread for the past seven weeks about this fiasco.
This is continually repeated in every thread dedicated to the 6 main errors and it's as if many simply ignore it.
Once DISM fails and returns errors twice in a row, there is nothing else to be done. There is no other program that can fix component store corruption, as the purpose of the /cleanup-image option is to prevent and, when it occurs, fix component store corruption.
I don't know if it's a case of people not wanting it to be true and figure if they ignore it their problem will be magically solved by Microsoft, but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by those who are told the solution and blatantly ignore it like it was never written.
So every user who comes to this thread knows and can't say they weren't told:
SOLUTION IS A REPAIR INSTALL
The solution is a repair install. It will fix the corruption and allow for a successful install of KB2919355
