I was using Lumia Black and updated it to 8.1 ( Cyan) from my phone itself ( official release). I updated to Cyan OS not longer than a month back. Everything was fine, until recently, a couple of days earlier, when I was talking to a freind of mine on my phone, the call dropped. A notification to restart my phone appered so I did it. Ever since I am stuck on the , " Airplane mode". The flight mode will rapidly switch on and off. So, I am unable to use my Sim and thus, no whatsapp, no calls..social life has been paralyzed.
I tried Hard reset ( about menu-> reset your phone) :- three times
Soft reset:- several times
Changed SIM :- a dozen times
Tried the twitter team suggestion ( I had found on this forum itself :- http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Lumia-1520-3-and-official-8-1-stuck-airplane-mode/td-p/2855086)
Now trying Nokia Software Recovery Tool 1.5.0 but the problem is that it is downloading 3058.50000.1425.0001, which I beleive is 'Cyan' again. I am also worried, I won't be able to downgrade to Lumia black which I am missing a lot. Anwho, I am currently downloading it and will see what happens, but If Nokia's Technical team can provide a solution for this software/firmware related glitch, I will be a happy fella. I am wondering, about the first occurence of this problem which I researched as being reported on Nokia official forums, 2-3 months back. By now a trustworthy solution should have been found and posted online.

I am also experiencing this issue. I am unable to turn off Airplane mode in my Lumia 520. I am also unable to use wifi. Once I am Turing on WIFI, there is fluctuation in wifi and Airplane mode.
My phone is useless now. I went to authorized dealer of Microsoft today but office was closed due to non working hours.
It is very disappointing where mobile manufacture made phone and do changes in software logic to make phone dead for old users.
I've had my 520 for over 2 years and it's worked well but now is stuck on airplane mode. I've tried the MS tool to reinstall the software but it's still on airplane mode. Even if it could be fixed I would not trust it to be reliable so I'm moving over to Android ........like most guys have. I'm done with Windows phones .

so, for consistency and fairness, when you buy an extremely low end android phone (so it can be compared to a 520), and it breaks down, you'll move to what? a very expensive iphone?
Definitely not an iPhone! The fact that the 520 was not expensive does not mean that it was poor quality, far from it the build quality looks excellent, it just doesn't have the features of the more expensive phones but I was happy with it. What I want is reliability and customer support but everything points to Windows phones leaving the market so an unsupported operating system is not good news for me.

Stuck on flight mode for a few days. Tried all of the suggested fixes more than once with no positive results. Managed to download 'Nokia Software Updater for Retail' (version 4.3.2). Not easy to find, but it's out there. When connected to phone the NSUfR shows the IMEI number, which is missing when searched for on phone (both from *#60# method and when located on Settings-About). I had to change the Settings-Download location on NSUfR to where the Software package was stored on my computer (under Program Data/Microsoft/Packages), I think this was stored there when attempting the Nokia Software Recovery Tool. After reloading the software with NSUfR my signal returned and flight mode deactivated. Curiously, the IMEI number is now visible again on the phone settings.
Good luck to anyone with this problem, it's very frustrating!
