Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    Help. I'm having the same problem, except I'm computer illiterate. I don't know what a DNS is so I can change it to 8.8........?

    It only happened after I installed a Windows update. It also happened to my friend the other day. She's waiting for me to find out how to fix it. Help. Please.

    Windows isn't helping.

    What operating system are you running?  Windows 8, 8.1 or windows 7?

    This is what's so baffling. You're not the only one to report issues with Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Why did a roll-back work for you and others? Suggests something other than DNS doesn't it?

    In my case, why did update work on some machines and not others when all obtained DNS settings from the same router?

    For the OEM VAR I was speaking with, update stopped working for most of the day today. Oddly, though, remote backup at a few locations also failed during this time - something amiss on the "Interwebs"? He temporarily changed DNS on the afflicted servers and then it worked.

    I just re-checked a couple of local boxes and Windows Update is working again. Perhaps we should just sit back and wait a few days to see if things resolve themselves.  I still would like a statement from MS though.

    Windows Update is working for me now.   Personally I'm not waiting for Microsoft to come up with a fix.

    So just follow the instructions in the above link if you wish.  I'm not technically savvy myself.  But this worked for me, I cannot explain the steps.   If it works, then it works.  For me it worked.  All the best!    Hope it works for you too!  God bless you!

    Go in and delete the download folder from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

    Then try Windows Updates again.
