Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    Hi All,

    Still changing DNS is a dirty solution.

    DNS has to be selected as address automatically and NOT by forced.

    Shame of Microsoft can not think about a practical solution for it.

    Your ISP gives you two things that gets you on the Internet.

    1. an IP address.  Normally this is up on the router that your network gets an IP and then your router translates that/converts it to typically a 192.168.1.x range. 
    2. A dns server address.  Typically ISPs have their own, some use either Google's DNS servers or OpenDNS servers.  I personally like using OpenDNS as it provides extra protection and web filtering.

    http://use.opendns.com/  << follow that page to flip your DNS to OpenDNS.  I would make the change on your router - UNLESS you have one like Comcast where they hide the DNS and don't let you adjust it.  Then you may have to do it on  your computer.

    Bottom line, any DNS should work to get you to Microsoft update, I still don't understand why this is happening.  But that said, I really prefer OpenDNS as it provides additional home security.

    HERE HEAR!!! I totally agree.

    I also like that AD blocking capabilities especially from the IMAGES and VIDEOS  perspective, since those vectors are being used more and more for malware. If one is careful one can "copy link" on the ADs to add those links to OpenDNS to improve and go beyond what OpenDNSs' "AD BLOCK" already does, if one invokes that screening system. Be careful though to confirm THE ACTUAL LINK or one may screen out some sites that you don't want to. My additional list is now about 20 items long and I rarely see an AD in Gmail, in a browser or on an app, on PC or Mobiles(tablet and smartphone).

    My ISP is Verizon. I have 3 computers that are having this problem. I run NIS.

    What is the resolution?

    Do we expect Microsoft to come out with a fix tomorrow? Just a bit concerned for my elderly Dad who I don't see and he's not going to know how to change a DNS address and I am not doing it for any computer.

    Sounds like someone made a mistake on their side and no one is acknowledging that fact!

    Change your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and it will fix the problem. A reboot may be needed.

    I must say the support here is totally useless. Microsoft knows this issue and knows the temporary fix as well.

    This changes your DNS to Googles public DNS servers (rather than your ISPs).  No idea why this would work, but I tried it after trying most of the other fixes here and it worked first time.
