Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    Hi all,

     I just got off the phone with Time Warner about five minutes ago, and told them about the problem. This is what they told me. They know of the issue with connecting to Microsoft and their updates, and it IS on their end(being Time Warner). They have been working on it for around six hours now. I told them about the quick fixes being put out here with changing the DNS server numbers, and they advise NOT to mess with it right now. The reason being, when they do get the issue resolved, you may have to go back and re-set your servers all over again. As they stated, the updates will still be there once this is resolved.

     As for me, I will just carry on as normal, and wait till they fix it on their end.

    I went through all this crud yesterday when I got a 80246002 error. I tried a bunch of fixes, etc and then started getting a 80072EE2 error.

    I changed the DNS addresses to Google - no luck.

    I finally restored from a Windows backup from last  July and it started working and it downloaded KB2993651.

    I changed my DNS addresses back to OpenDns last night, rebooted, and it was still working, but gave me the 80246002 this morning. Changed the DNS back to Google and it works again.

    What a mess!!

    That just means it hasn't filtered through to your ISP yet.  These things take time.  Just use the altered DNS for now.   Test it from time to time.

    So now every time I need to freakin update windows I have to change the DNS???

    I tried to remove the dns and back to original settings(dns automatic) and I got this err again.

    Microsoft's changed DNS must have finally filtered through the world-wide web as I can now poll for updates without getting that error with my DNS set back to the default (Automatic).

    So it appears that things are normalizing again.
