Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    If your IP & DNS is not set to automatic in your PC's adapter, that would override your router settings. This DNS problem is not connected to the recent KB Update fiasco by MS. It is a different problem caused by MS because they changed WU/MU IP addresses. The DNS is a Lookup table to correlate the URL with their IP address for WU/MU. In other words, your PC is not finding the Update Servers. All DNS/ISP Providers have not yet update the DNS Lookup tables yet.

    This is how I understand it! I have never had the problem because I always use OpenDNS.....

    You also may need to Flush your DNS Cache on your PC? Do the following in a Command Prompt OR PowerShell Window, same differance:

    IPConfig /?

    IPConfig /All

    IPConfig /FlushDNS

    IPConfig /All

    (any other command in the "/?" list you wish to explore)

    A restart might be required?

    You should now see DNS is in the DHCP or automatic mode (ie pointed at your router). If your choose to put the DNS Addresses in your PC (hard coded) then you will see Google's or OpenDNS's DNS IP Address in your "/All".

    Many thanks.  This "fix" of changing the DNS worked and I can now get updates.  You really wonder why Microsoft would not make this information knows.  I have spent several hours trying to determine what was wrong.  Really Poor Support.  I guess they have little concern about the time there customers' waste on their errors.

    click 'start'

    click 'control panel'

    click 'network and sharing center'

    click 'change adapter settings'

    right click 'local area connection' and choose 'properties'

    highlight 'internet protocol version 4(TCP/IPv4)' and click 'properties' at the bottom of the window

    click the the 'use the following DNS server addresses:' dot and put 8's in the spaces. 8,8,8,8 and the backup 8.8.4.4, and OK that of course.  That routes your Internet through Google Servers until such time as the DNS that MS changed filters through to your ISP.

    I originally installed 2982791 on Aug 12 , and experienced no issues.

    I then uninstalled 2982791on Aug 27, as per MS instructions listed below:

    "Microsoft strongly recommends that customers who have not uninstalled the 2982791 update do so prior to applying the 2993651 update. Customers do not need to uninstall the expired 2982791 update before applying the 2993651 update; however, Microsoft strongly recommends it."

    I then installed the replacement, 2993651.

    After the install of 2993651, on  three win7sp1 machines, I tried to run Windows Update. This error was produced:

    "Windows could not search for new updates”:

    Code 80246002

    On the single win8.1 machine I installed 2993651 no error was produced.

    I read thru this site and changed the DNS on my Router to Google DNS, still no success.

    Suggestions??

    Where do you go to change the DNS server?

    OpenDNS.com has complete info on this. You can choose their servers or Googles. I prefer OpenDNS myself and I change the DNS Settings on my router so my whole network gets the benefit. If you are mobile you have to change it on the device.

    The thing is, the big operators of DNS like Google and OpenDNS are more matisticaly kept up to date.
