Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    I downloaded updates on 8/28 on 4 laptops and received error code 80246002 two days later when I again tried to reach out for addtl updates for all machines. All are somooth running T530 series Lenovo laptops 2 years or less in age, W7 home or pro, all in trouble. I am not very tech savy like many of you.

    Am located in North/Central NJ with Verizon Fios. Have not changed anything on any machine. All stuff downloaded on the 28th still installed and this morning, I am able to access microsoft updates- which there are none of.

    So I have to believe the issue stems from my isp not updating their stuff to work with microsoft's recent updates....or micrsoft changing something they should not have which is causing conflicts with numerous isps around the country.

    In any event, all of my machines are working ok this morning, yet I've not not anything or downloaded any "fixes". So as a non tech person, gotta think this whole mess is related to aconflict between one or more updates and my local isp, verizon. Good luck everyone.

    WINDOW UPDATE IS NOW WORKING.... IT IS BACK AS USUAL.

    I DIDN'T CHANGE DNS OR ANYTHING ELSE ON MY COMPUTER. 

    SEEMS TO ME THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE MICROSOFT SERVER(S) FOR UPDATES. WHEN THERE WAS THE RED X PREVENTING THE UPDATE, IT DID SAY "TRY AGAIN".

    SO, ALL I DID WAS WAITED TILL THIS MORNING TO TRY AGAIN, AND THE UPDATE WENT THROUGH SMOOTHLY AS USUAL. 

    ON A POSITIVE NOTE, THANKS TO THIS THREAD, I LEARNT A BIT MORE ABOUT DNS.

    I have had the same issues, and tried everything.....and the 8.8.x.x DNS address......I have found that the 8.8.x.x address did not work for me, but the 4.2.2.2 address did.....strange but it worked.
