Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    Has anyone made any headway or seen anything that might suggest an actual solution is in the works instead of DNS switching...which sadly isn't an option for me. I've been reading everything I can and the best I've seen is that its either an ISP DNS issue or a Windows Updater issue is that correct? This really happened at a bad time. I have several systems waiting for a fresh install of Windows but if I can't update them fully I'm not able to ship them out. I was planning on getting caught up on my side work over the holiday weekend but I guess Microsoft had different plans...I was wondering if I'm starting with a fresh install of Windows meaning just drivers to run the components no add on software, would I just be able to uncheck the update that's causing the issue and move on with the whole update process or is this an auto update I wouldn't be able to avoid? From start to finish it takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get from Windows install to driver install to the long list of updates that are successful to the point where Updater fails. That's a lot of waiting for failure I'd like to avoid.

    If it helps I have Comcast Internet.

    What ISP are you using?

    We're seeing some issues with Time Warner and flipping the DNS settings - either in your pc or in the router to Google's DNS or OPENDNS is resolving this issue.

    I too have this Windows Update problem i.e. the RED X making it impossible to use Windows Update from the Control panel.

    I ran the Windows Update Trouble Shooter software to correct the 80246002 error. The program reported " Windows Update error 0x80070057”"

    I googled this error and found the Microsoft site which said to run the System Update Readiness Tool “ HotFix KB947821”. I ran this program and it appears that some updates went through. HOWEVER, THE WINDOWS UPDATE PROGRAM FROM THE CONTROL PANEL STILL DOES NOT WORK. THE RED X still persists. 

    MICROSOFT...PLEASE HELP HELP HELP !

    If your IP & DNS is not set to automatic in your PC's adapter, that would override your router settings. This DNS problem is not connected to the recent KB Update fiasco by MS. It is a different problem caused by MS because they changed WU/MU IP addresses. The DNS is a Lookup table to correlate the URL with their IP address for WU/MU. In other words, your PC is not finding the Update Servers. All DNS/ISP Providers have not yet update the DNS Lookup tables yet.

    This is how I understand it! I have never had the problem because I always use OpenDNS.....

    You also may need to Flush your DNS Cache on your PC? Do the following in a Command Prompt OR PowerShell Window, same differance:

    IPConfig /?

    IPConfig /All

    IPConfig /FlushDNS

    IPConfig /All

    (any other command in the "/?" list you wish to explore)

    A restart might be required?

    You should now see DNS is in the DHCP or automatic mode (ie pointed at your router). If your choose to put the DNS Addresses in your PC (hard coded) then you will see Google's or OpenDNS's DNS IP Address in your "/All".
