I'm also having this issue. Running Windows 8.0 Pro 64 bit. Gets to 50%, get error code 0x80240031. Update Manager sees the failed installation and the issue, but does not define it. Says it also fixed another error code (0x80070057). No issues with rest of system; everything checked out. MS, please tell us why this is happening! Will continue to try as it appears a few have finally gotten it to take.
Windows 8.1 Update Error Code: 0x80240031
I am getting error code 0x80240031 during download of Windows 8.1 for 50% of Downloading. Can anybody help me fix this?

2013-10-20T16:57:00+00:00 I finally, successfully got 8.1 Pro 64bit installed on my last of 4 PCs. This last one kept failing at 50% with an error code of 0x80240031. I had an iffy Network card. I connected a USB Wireless adapter and the download completed. The 1st 50% is the download! the last 50% is all the setup, compatibility checks and installation.

2013-10-21T02:04:27+00:00 Hey Everybody,
Just thought I should let you know that I managed to get it to work. I downloaded the ISO version and then installed from my desktop. Don't exactly know why it worked, must have been a connection issue but w/e.
Very frustrating process
