I am having the same issue for updating from windows8 Pro to Windows8.1 Professional. I am pissed at this point. There are no updates for me to update, and the windows 8.1 app in the store never finishes downloading. I am beyond pissed at windows anyways.

For what it's worth I had been using a wireless connection, so I wired the laptop straight to the modem and successfully downloaded. ONLY to find in the end another set of error codes and the message that it couldn't update and had restored to my original version, i.e. W8Pro. Back to the drawing boards.

After numerous attempts I finally got the update to download and install. After the computer rebooted I got the blue screen with a pfn list corrupt message. After that the computer reverted back to 8.0

I'm having this problem as well but I don't even get to start downloading anything. It just says 0% then 'Something happened' along with the error 0x80240031

Has anyone tried installing this update after doing a reset of Windows 8?

I  tried it last night and again this morning.  Only thing running on this machine is Windows 8 and Office 2013.  Still getting the same 0x80240031 error. I have noticed some network issues on my end.  I'll try again after I get the network connection fixed.

I was finally able to download two Windows 8.1 upgrades from Windows 8.   I first ran all of the 63 Windows updates from the settings charm screen, then I went to the control panel and downloaded and installed 8 more "important" updates indicated there, next I downloaded 1 "optional" update in the control panel, and finally I downloaded and installed the suggested update from the Windows Store download page so the download would begin.  After four update sessions (63+8+1+1), I clicked on the tile in the Windows Store screen and the download began after 16 hours of repeated failures.  I repeated this sequence for my second Windows 8 computer which took about four hours, and it started to downloaded immediately and took some two hours over my Comcast connection.  I hope your success comes more quickly with this suggestion.
