2013-10-19T04:04:49+00:00 See my earlier post - it's just about my waiting as all of you.
Subsequently having done everything others have mentioned - scan, store reset, etc., etc! I found this from another site after getting a corrupted file message from scannow.
Open Administration Command Prompt (rt click the start icon and select command prompt (Admin))
Type at the cursor
Dism /online /cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
I'm a relative novice but I don't think the capitalization matters - perhaps others will tell.
It takes a while to go through. But it said finally it had fixed a store issue.
Then I found after a reboot I had 13 updates. And I'd already checked thoroughly earlier that there were no more updates needed. Can't explain that, sorry! So I'm now having a go at another download, probably number 10 or so.
If this was any other business offering such a service in any country in the world, it would (and should) be drummed out of business.
Now I'm waiting to see if my download attempt will get past 50% presently at about 45%!
SORRY - folks just checked - it's bombed out at the same point again.
As a novice again, I think a lot of this may be from the lengthy time of the downloads and ISP responses. I might just wait a few more days.
A pity there's not a disc purchase option, because relying on bytes across the ether must be prone to errors in data.
I'm sorry - but its back to the drawing board. The trouble with universal downloads is that you can't get a quiet time to download!

2013-10-18T22:11:59+00:00 IMPORTANT - It worked this time and now I have 8.1 installed and functioning.
See my post right above this post.
Just to be clear my computer is set the exact same way it was the first ten times I tried to update.
Not sure what it means other than MS fixed something.

2013-10-18T20:56:03+00:00 IMPORTANT _ My PC is up to date.
I just opened the "Store" to try for the 15th time and there was no 8.1 Upgrade there. A Link from MS stated the following:
""If your PC is currently running Windows 8 (or Windows RT), and you want to update to Windows 8.1 (or Windows RT 8.1), in most cases, you’ll see this free update prominently featured on the Windows Store home page. If you’ve opened the Store and you don’t see the update, it could be for one of these reasons:
You might need the latest updates from Windows Update
Although the Windows 8.1 update is downloaded and installed from the Store, your PC needs another update, KB 2871389, before Windows 8.1 becomes available to you in the Store.
After KB 2871389 is installed and you’ve restarted your PC, go to the Start screen, tap or click Store, and look for the Windows 8.1 update. For more complete info on installing Windows 8.1, see Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8.
You might be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the free update from the Store ""
I Do Not have KB2871389 available as an update. WT.... ?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/why-can-t-find-update-store
UPDATE - 5 minutes later: Back to the store and the update to 8.1 is back for me...WT...?
Now download for the 16th time.
UPDATE 2 - Downloaded surprisingly fast (5 minutes FIOS) and believe it or not it is installing, checking compatibility etc. I am going to close this down while it hopefully completes its tasks. Bacfk soon.
