Windows 8.1 Update Error Code: 0x80240031

It's not microsoft   It is the internet provider they have the problem with there third party usb modems the driver's do not have a driver signature or valid certificate that Microsoft has approved for the upgrades att, Verizon etc. Not to mention the cards in surface laptops etc. The developer's at Novatel; smithmicro to name a few have to provide to Microsoft the signatures to become compatible windows 8.1

Check your service provider tell them to step up and get there software up to date.

Bullsh*t! How can three of the computers in my household, all connected to the same ISP through the same router and modem all upgrade to 8.1, but one laptop that is getting this error can't? This is Microsoft, all the way.

I'm still scratching my head wondering why so many people insist on chasing W8.  W7 works beautifully.  W8 is a disaster by any measure.  Abandon the chase for the latest...it ain't always the greatest.

I went through the multiple attempts.  Actually got to 8.1...and hated it!

Well well, Mr. 0x80240031, we meet again.

 

I've been wasting my life away for several days straight to no avail trying to update to 8.1 again.  I had successfully updated months ago, after numerous attempts and my fair share of hair yanking, but a later update for 8.1 simply refused to install and I was getting various errors from Updater.  So, I decided to start from scratch in a desperate attempt to finally clean things up.  That was a mistake.  I should have just lived with never being able to update 8.1 further.

 

Having wiped my drive and performed virgin installs of Windows 8 Pro several times, jumping through hoops and experiencing numerous and varied error codes plus the obligatory BSOD's which also varied in nature, and having read volumes of forum posts re: error codes, I'm now at this error, again, in this particular 8.1 update attempt.

 

Oh, and 8.1 was no "upgrade" for me, as I got as many BSOD's with it as with W8 Pro.  There's nothing wrong with my hardware, it's not a cheap build and components have been thoroughly tested, so really, don't bother going there.

 

I've wasted far too much of my life on this and will now just resign myself to the fact that W8.x will never work properly -- those who think it does haven't dug deeply and found the inevitable corrupted files; ignorance is bliss I suppose.

W8 Pro's last available update refuses to install this time around and W8 Pro refuses to quit self-corrupting its system files (with every install) -- all it takes sometimes is a simple reboot on a virgin install.  That's all!  Reboot a perfectly clean, fresh W8 Pro and it screws itself.  I hope it enjoyed it, because I sure didn't; I didn't even get dinner.

 

Here's an example of how idiotic the Updater and this OS is:  one virgin install updated 77 KB's cleanly with no errors; lots of errors/fails on the rest of the 105 (FFS! 105!) updates.  Another virgin install on the same machine updated 94 KB's at once, of which about half failed.  Sometimes there are no BSOD's, sometimes there are more than you can shake a USB stick at.  Brilliant!

 

Don't even talk to me about Update Troubleshooter/FixIt, temp wipes, DISM, SFC, Store Sync, MS account vs. local account, etc. etc.; been there done that a hundred times if not more, tried it all, in varying sequences and varying points during install/updating.

 

Let us not forget MS's most thoughtful decision to not provide us with an ISO of 8.1 so that we're forced to blow that much more of our valuable time re-downloading it when things go awry (and oh yes, they will go awry, over and over; but hey at least there's variety, since you often get different errors with different attempts).

 

MS hasn't pushed out an unstable disaster like this since Windows 95, and that was bad.  Windows 8.x is WORSE.  I get more BSOD's than I ever got from any previous Windows.  If you don't like a BSOD/error, reboot and maybe you'll like the next one.  The updater and self-corruption are simply pathetic excuses for "engineering", none of the dozens of "solutions" work for a lot of people, including myself, and tech support is a joke (aside from their checking of their own posts as "answers" even when they aren't, which would be amusing were it not so pathetic -- yes, they do that).

 

MS is a massive train wreck, and W8.x is truly an epic failure POS product from a POS company.  I've suffered many a headache since MS-DOS because of MS, with Gates laughing all the way to the bank, and this is the last straw.  One may be tempted to believe PC users are now considered 2nd class citizens, due to MS's cravings for the mobile market, and that may be true, but geez, even owners of the Surface tablet can't get MS updates to work.  How pitiful is that!

 

People whine about the old Start Menu going AWOL in W8.x.  boo freakin' hoo!  I don't give a rat's a$$ about that, since Classic Shell works.  All I wanted for my $150 was an OS that wouldn't sh!t on me (and itself) every day, and I didn't even get THAT much respect.

If MS doesn't fix the updater, self-corruption and BSOD's with an 8.2 rollout (and soon), I'm done with this company for good.  Here's hoping this junk OS and the resulting fallout encourages companies to publish more titles for Linux (or anyone/anything else, other than Apple).

I have also tried all the workarounds and it still does not work - updates, turn off antivirus software This is very frustrating. Some of us have to pay for our internet and 4gb failed downloads cost us money. Disappointing!
