I tried running that memtest86+, burned that Iso file (not clear on what a bootable CD is?) to a CD, left the CD in, but when I restarted nothing happened. Tried rebooting twice.

Did you create the bootable memtest86+ CD with IMGBurn? That's the easiest way to do it IMO.

A bootable CD allows you to boot your PC off the CD (assuming you choose the correct boot option, available after pressing the F12 key IMMEDIATELY after you turn on the PC).

    IMGBurn:

    ** Memtest86+ V4.20 (25/01/2011) **

(you need to unzip the .zip file to get the .iso file)

Can you confirm that you have a Dell-branded XP Installation CD (for Recovery Console)?

Since all your data is backed up, you can certainly run the Recovery Console (if you have it!).

My last bsod issue, I don't remember what finally solved it ( a driver issue?) but am almost sure it wasn't malware.

Not malware, but I believe we determined it was conflicting anti-malware programs, both running at the same time, no?

OK got the Image Burn, but which option do I use, the first one?

So I shut down the computer, then press the F12 right after I turn it on? That's what you mean by "choose the correct boot option"? Do I press and hold, or tap the F12 like going into Safe Mode?

yep that reinstallation CD with SP1 has Dell printed on it.

"Not malware, but I believe we determined it was conflicting anti-malware programs, both running at the same time, no?" Sorry Daavee but I don't remember what it was as most of what we did was over my head.

thanks for working on the weekend :-)

    Yes.

    > So I shut down the computer, then press the F12 right after I turn it on? That's what you mean by "choose the correct boot option"? Do I press and hold, or tap the F12 like going into Safe Mode?

Yes. Tap it several times IMMEDIATELY after powering on PC BEFORE Windows even has a chance to start.

    > yep that reinstallation CD with SP1 has Dell printed on it.

Good. You can boot off that CD, run Recovery Console, and run the chkdsk /r command to clear the dirty bit, per the directions already provided.

Ok the ram test takes overnight it says. In the morning I assume I'll save a Log of the results?

How long will the recovery console and chkdsc /r take?

What if I mess up a step, should I shut down, restart, then reboot again?

I better print out those instructions!

If I do mess something up and can't restart my computer is there anyone I can call for help? :-)
