Russian mnemonic keyboard three letters missing: щ ч э

It is nice that windows 8 added a mnemonic Russian keyboard.

Unfortunately there are three letters which I can not find: щ, ч and э.

These three letters exist in the standard Russian keyboard. They are at the following location (in the US  keyboard): o,x and '.

Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

You just need to type multiple keys to get to those letters: For example some (not all) of them:

sh -> ш

ch -> ч

jo -> ё

je -> э

And this is just awesome. This means you just type the way it sounds and Russian letters just magically produced.

Chego eschjo xhelat'? -> Чего ещё желать?

Note that the left hand side is quite readable as is.

One not very obvious aspect is the way the combination "ые" is typed, by the way. You actually need to hit the spacebar after typing [English] 'y', so that the keyboard knows you are in fact typing 'ы' and not the first element of ’э', which is entered using the English key sequence 'ye'. By contrast, if you want to type 'ые’ (as in 'красивые') you need to type '[krasiv]y[spacebar]e.'

Was frustrating for me before I figured that one out...

    Sorry for not having been too clear in my preceding message.

    Yes I downloaded the T2 source code and loaded the яверты code.

    I still get the same error CL.EXE returns 1.

    To summarize, I tried everything:

    put  MSKLC into C:

    enabled 8.3 names

    ran as administrator

    used the T2 code

    used Paul's proven яверт source code

    Nothing worked, I give up

    But thank you both, Mike and Paul, for your generous and knowledgeable help

    Hi Gerhard,

    A couple of other things to try, just in case.

    Could you remove any versions of Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator that you have installed. Then go to

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=22339

    and download a fresh copy of Micosoft Keyboard Layout Creator version 1.4

    Install it. As you have indicated that 8.3 names are enabled then the default install location should be fine. Install as Administrator to be on the safe side.

    Now just check that you have version 2.0 of .NET installed. To do this go to

    Control Panel/Programs and Features

    Click on "Turn Windows Featurs on or off"

    Check that you have an entry in the list it gives you for

    .NET framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and there is a black mark in the checkbox for this item to show it is active.

    If this is the case then you have .NET 2.0 which is what version 1.4 requires.

    Now check what Visual C++ Runtimes are installed on your machine. Go to

    Control Panel/Programs and Features

    Look down the list, I have entries for

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable X64

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable X86

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable X64

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable X86

    I'm really not sure if you need all of them, it depends on what software is installed on your machine. They might be relevant, and might not - I've not been able to find any clear information on this point in regard to Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.

    Now try loading the T2 source code into the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator program you have just installed and, without editing the source in any way, try to create the installers.

    If you still get the CL.EXE error 1 problem then I'm afraid I really don't know what else to try.

    If you try the things about .NET and C++ from the latest post by Mike and still face the same error, then (as I mentioned) you can use a proven work-around:

    • run MSKLC on another machine to build your own layout - on Windows 7/Vista/XP
    • then you will be able to install that layout on Windows 8 without any problem
