Russian mnemonic keyboard three letters missing: щ ч э

It is nice that windows 8 added a mnemonic Russian keyboard.

Unfortunately there are three letters which I can not find: щ, ч and э.

These three letters exist in the standard Russian keyboard. They are at the following location (in the US  keyboard): o,x and '.

Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

You just need to type multiple keys to get to those letters: For example some (not all) of them:

sh -> ш

ch -> ч

jo -> ё

je -> э

And this is just awesome. This means you just type the way it sounds and Russian letters just magically produced.

Chego eschjo xhelat'? -> Чего ещё желать?

Note that the left hand side is quite readable as is.

One not very obvious aspect is the way the combination "ые" is typed, by the way. You actually need to hit the spacebar after typing [English] 'y', so that the keyboard knows you are in fact typing 'ы' and not the first element of ’э', which is entered using the English key sequence 'ye'. By contrast, if you want to type 'ые’ (as in 'красивые') you need to type '[krasiv]y[spacebar]e.'

Was frustrating for me before I figured that one out...

    Hi Paul,

    It would appear that for CL.exe etc to work with directory names with spaces then 8.3 names need to be enabled on a Windows machine. The default Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 installs seem to do this. My MSKLC is also installed in directories with spaces in their names and works fine.

    I think that the problem arises when 8.3 names are turned off. In those cases you have to install in eg C:\MSKLC without spaces. It might also be that even the data files sugh as the MSKLC source files also need to be in folders whose names have no spaces in them, and so on. If someone installs MSKLC into say C:\MSKLC and still gets problems, I would make sure that any source files and the build files are all in folders with no spaces in their names.

    The way to check whether 8.3 names is enabled on a Windows 8.1 machine is to run the following in a command window (which needs to be opened with Administrator access)

    fsutil 8dot3name query C:

    This will tell you if 8.3 names are enabled on the C: - if you are using a different drive then substitute your drive for C:.

    The command syntax can vary a bit between versions of Windows, so someone needs to google fsutil and their particular windows version to find the right command syntax for that version.

    As this setting is available on XP, Vista, and Windows 7, it is possible for this kind of problem to arise on these versions of Windows as well - depending on how the machine is configured at install time - though the standard retail install does appear to turn this feature on, judging by the versions of Windows I have installed XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

    So it's the same that Mike has just mentioned - about spaces in the folder name. Have you tried it?

    If it helps then it would be Windows 8.1-specific problem, because on my 64 bit Windows 7 MSKLC is installed into directories that have spaces in their names:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4

    Gerhard,

    I've just tried using the the MSKLC source files posted by PaulGor (KLC-files.zip) and these all build fine on my Windows 8.1 64 bit machine machine.
