Russian mnemonic keyboard three letters missing: щ ч э

It is nice that windows 8 added a mnemonic Russian keyboard.

Unfortunately there are three letters which I can not find: щ, ч and э.

These three letters exist in the standard Russian keyboard. They are at the following location (in the US  keyboard): o,x and '.

Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

You just need to type multiple keys to get to those letters: For example some (not all) of them:

sh -> ш

ch -> ч

jo -> ё

je -> э

And this is just awesome. This means you just type the way it sounds and Russian letters just magically produced.

Chego eschjo xhelat'? -> Чего ещё желать?

Note that the left hand side is quite readable as is.

One not very obvious aspect is the way the combination "ые" is typed, by the way. You actually need to hit the spacebar after typing [English] 'y', so that the keyboard knows you are in fact typing 'ы' and not the first element of ’э', which is entered using the English key sequence 'ye'. By contrast, if you want to type 'ые’ (as in 'красивые') you need to type '[krasiv]y[spacebar]e.'

Was frustrating for me before I figured that one out...

    No, looks like it's 64-bit system.

    1. When you go to Keyboard Layouts screen, try to choose "Russian" and not "Russian Mnemonic" as my steps were to tell the system to use kbdru_zh.dll instead of kbdru.dll which is standard Russian layout (not mnemonic):

    a) Control Panel - Language

    b) what do you see under "Input methods"? Probably "Russian - Mnemonic", right?

    Then click there on "Add" and add "Russian". Now you should see, under "Input Method",

    "Russian - Mnemonic"                                        Add/Remove

    "Russian"                                                             Add/Remove

    Click on "Remove" for "Russian - Mnemonic" - you should have only "Russian" there. Log-out of the system and then login again.

    Try to type in say Notepad

    Hey, thanks again for the wonderfully helpful response! 

    Your first question is a good one. Yes, I had extracted the files before clicking on 'setup,' so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

    I then followed the second solution step by step - great directions, by the way - but unfortunately at the end I was left with the default Windows 8 (so-called) mnemonic keyboard, which requires those awkward key combinations in order to produce certain letters.

    But here's a question: *is* Windows RT actually 64-bit?

    I'm not really a computer person, but I did a quick search, and (if I'm understanding) it seems RT might actually be 32-bit.

    If that's true, do I need to navigate to a different subfolder (not WOW64)?

    There are 2 solutions:

    1. Are you sure that you extracted files from .ZIP before clicking on setup.exe?

    Some users overlook the fact that they clicked on .ZIP and thus are now in "archive View" mode, just looking at the contents of (still) unopen .zip

    If one clicks on setup.exe while in that "view content of zip-archive" window, then setup does not work.

    One needs to choose Extract from the menu in that View window to have all files physically present in a folder and only then click on setup.exe

    Is it your case? If not (i.e. you did extract all the files from .zip before clicking on setup.exe) then:

    1. You can add phonetic layout manually - as it was done in Windows 2000 and early XP days when it was no setup.exe yet.

    All this (prepared by MSKLC) setup.exe does is:

    • copies layout's .dll into needed Windows folder (32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows have different destinations)
    • create a record in Windows Registry

    So for Windows 8 (as it's 64-bit system):

    Step. 1

    • extract files from .zip
    • navigate to sub-folder   WOW64
    • copy DLL you see there (f.e. kbdru_zh.dll or whatever variant you downloaded)  to

    c:\Windows\SysWOW64

    Step 2. Register newly added layout in the system:

    • download http://winrus.com/phon-reg.zip
    • extract files from zip-archive - should have now phon.REG file in a folder
    • if your variant is not kbdru_zh.dll then open phon.REG in Notepad and replace kbdru_zh.dll in the very last loine with the file name you copied in Step 1. Then Save.
    • click on phon.REG and should see a message about new Registry record
    • log-off from Windows and then Login again

    Now when you switch to "RU" you should have a phonetic layout working.
