Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7.

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

I finally found the solution because i could not change to windows 7, got to advanced settings from PC properties and disable automatic driver installation. Then uninstall the existing driver then get an older driver from this link http://ananddrs.com/2014/09/24/pl2303-prolific-usb-to-ttl-driver-for-windows-8-1/ and install it using the device manager. you're done!

I have Windows 8. After installing Seaclear nav programme and prolific gps could not run programme.          www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8cojWp8qY0  worked for me. All good. Lazzag

I have read almost every posting in this thread but I always was puzzled by one thing : driver version 3.3.2.102 does not appear in the driver list that I downloaded from the zip-file mentioned in the thread. However in the youtube video I saw that the previous driver 3.3.11.152 was used and that worked for me as well.

So thank you to all who made this thread worth wile reading !

As strange as it may look, you need an outdated driver to make it work. The only working version i've found is 3.3.2.102, which you can find on the links bellow:

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7FildjsrNkILWhYVHYwanJLS3c/edit?usp=sharing

    http://mir.cr/1R5ACC0L

You need to force this driver version by going to device manager, choose update driver from right click into prolific adapter, the choose "browse my computer for driver software", then "let me pick...".  On the next window, it should show you different versions of the driver, and you need to choose ver 3.3.2.102 ok?

    This worked for me too.

I had to use a VM with win7 just to make my usb-serial work, but with this driver, no need for extra step. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, this worked for me, too.

    Many thanks.
