Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7.

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

    Fantastic. Works perfectly thanks.

I guess they hadn't added the "check the version and screw the customer over by purposely breaking the driver" switch into this older version.

Sometimes you wonder who is running the asylum...

A few entries previous, I posted that:

the current driver supplied by Windows Update does work with my USB to RS232 adapter

It takes a compatibility setting at the desktop level, but mine has been working like a champ under W8.1  with the WU driver, and I had almost given up trying to find some outdated driver.

Either nobody has bothered to read it, or nobody tried it, or they tried it and quietly moved on (with or without good results), or ??

That's interesting. I wouldn't be able to do that without the other driver changes as it wasn't starting the device.

That said I have found I get the BSOD with the old driver and Putty. With Teraterm (oddly enough) all seems to be working... which is what I need...

I may have a go at running Putty in a compatibility mode and see what happens, thanks,

    Alex
