We want to use windows 8 but due to this driver problem, we are not buying windows 8

Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7. 

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

    Back to the theme of this thread:

    I was about to give up with my USB-serial adapter until I found this thread, which offered some hope.  To shorten the story a bit, after trying a few things, I  was able to get the currently released, signed driver available from Windows Update to work on my Win 8.1 LT and USB to Serial adapter of unknown origin. 

    I ended up setting the compatibility settings on the app that used the adapter to Win 7 and ran the app as administrator.  Gracias a Dios, it worked without a hitch.  When I tried the WU file before, with no intervention, the app hung up and stopped responding. 

    The one thing I did do, and I don't know what made any difference was to go into the Device Manager and set the driver so that it used COM1 as its port, rather than the COM12 that it would have chosen. 

    I am a bit fuzzy on whether I am using the driver supplied by Windows Update, or something that looked similar that I scooped up from the recommendations above, but here are the details from Device Manager.  Sorry if this seems sketchy, but I quit thinking about it when it started working; I've got other fires to put out.

    As strange as it may look, you need an outdated driver to make it work. The only working version i've found is 3.3.2.102, which you can find on the links bellow:

    You need to force this driver version by going to device manager, choose update driver from right click into prolific adapter, the choose "browse my computer for driver software", then "let me pick...".  On the next window, it should show you different versions of the driver, and you need to choose ver 3.3.2.102 ok?

    Nice one!

    Nothing annoys me more than the 'lifecycle' approach to hardware. saying something is 'end of life' when it's only a year or 2 old and still works perfectly is incredibly frustrating.

    I was issued a new laptop running win8.1 64 bit. I use the usb-serial converter to get to the command line interface on a range of Cisco & other vendors kit and I couldn't get this working till now, so thanks for that :-)
